Malaysia steps on Indonesia's toes in dance dispute

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Malaysia is separated from Indonesia's Sumatra island by just 40 miles of water, but an ocean has opened up between them over who owns a traditional dance, the latest in a series of disputes between the Southeast Asian neighbors.

The feud, one of many over issues as diverse as culture, pollution and borders in the region of 600 million people, adds to the difficulties leaders face in trying to turn Southeast Asia into a unified economic community by 2015.

Malaysian efforts to promote the Tor-tor folk dance and Gordang Sambilan drum performance - both with origins in Sumatra - as its own cultural heritage sparked protests this month in Jakarta, where a group torched Malaysia's flag and threw stones at its embassy. The violence was a sharp contrast to the Tor-tor itself - a gentle, traditional dance featuring a mix of subtle hand and leg movements.

Malaysia's government summoned Indonesia's acting ambassador for talks on Monday to express its concern over the violence.

Government officials on both sides have tried to calm the situation, saying it is a misunderstanding over plans to promote the culture of the Mandailing people, who live in both Sumatra and across the narrow Malacca Strait in mainland Malaysia.

Malaysia and Indonesia share deep Islamic and cultural ties that go back centuries. The Malay and Indonesian languages are mutually intelligible and historians say they originate from Indonesia's Riau islands, just south of Singapore. But subtle differences do exist and could be part of the reason for the latest row. The Malay word for heritage, "warisan", carries a stronger connotation of ownership in Indonesian.

FOLK MUSIC, BATIK, AND CURRY

The case has touched a raw nerve in Indonesia, which has previously argued with Malaysia over who claims the rights to folk music, batik textiles and spicy beef Rendang curry.

In recent years, allegations of poor treatment of the hundreds of thousands of Indonesian maids who cook, clean and care for children in smaller, richer Malaysia have soured ties. Jakarta stopped sending domestic helpers to Malaysia in 2009 after numerous cases of abuse, only lifting the ban this month after Malaysia set stricter rules for employers of maids.

"Indonesians are jealous that Malaysians have a better standard of living and it does seem that Malaysians - and especially the Malay ethnic group - tend to look down their noses at their Indonesian brethren," said Keith Loveard, who heads political risk analysis at Concord Consulting in Jakarta.

The neighbors fought a border war in the 1960s on the island of Borneo, and some in Indonesia still seem in a fighting spirit.

"Malaysia is a small country. It would only take us five days or a week to burn it," said an executive in Jakarta originally from Sumatra, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The Batak people of Sumatra, a related ethnic group to the Mandailing, have a reputation in Indonesia as argumentative. A local joke goes that in law courts it's common to find that lawyers and those on trial are all Batak.

While any real conflict is very unlikely, nations in the region have been stepping up defense spending in recent years, as fears grow over China's military and posturing between it and Southeast Asian countries over ownership of oil-rich islands in disputed waters north of Borneo.

Thailand and Cambodia fought a deadly border skirmish over a disputed ancient Hindu temple last year, an issue that the Association of South East Asian Nations struggled to mediate, underlining its troubles in fostering genuine unity.

MORE HIP-HOP THAN TOR-TOR

While anger will soon dissipate, a common sentiment heard in Indonesia is simply disappointment that Malaysia feels the need to "steal" its culture. From the Malaysian perspective, it is simply about preserving culture that is in danger of dying out.

"Recognizing these two cultures under the act doesn't mean that it is being 'claimed' and owned by Malaysia. What we hope is, through the registration of the cultures, they can be preserved and widely promoted," said Ramli Abdul Karim Hasibuan, president of the Mandailing association in Malaysia.

Scholars say the Mandailing people in Malaysia did not resist colonial British attempts last century to label them as Malay, which led to their culture evaporating, whereas traditions have been preserved better in Sumatra, Indonesia's largest island and full of different ethnicities.

The younger generation, more likely to dance to hip-hop than the Tor-tor, is more concerned about who wins between Malaysia and Indonesia on the soccer pitch, though haze pollution in Kuala Lumpur from Indonesian land-clearing fires is a real irritant.

"Keep your dances and your culture. While you're at it, keep your haze to yourself too," said Twitter user @mediha_m, responding to Indonesians on the social media site lambasting Malaysia's cultural poverty.

Another new feature is integrated remote functionality to control playback on connected TVs and other devices. This apparently extends to more than just Google TV, as we're told to "expect more updates later" on how this feature will become broadly available. If you're not rocking the latest Android software don't freak out yet, as the team indicates these features will come to more devices later. Blue Ivy Carter Named Honorary Citizen of Croatian Island

"I think it's Blue Ivy, which would be quite appropriate!"

Tourism to Hvar has reportedly increased since the clip was posted; the island was even named as Lonely Planet's fifth best vacation destination in 2012.

1st ever Chassidic wedding in SC held in Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. --?

The sea of bearded men in black frock coats and fedoras, lifting their voices in ancient Hebrew chants, was the first hint that this was no ordinary South Carolina wedding.

Then there was the striking brunette bride, her eyes shielded by a rectangular face covering, led by her parents and grandparents seven times around the somber groom under a flower-decked chupah, or canopy, overlooking picturesque Rockyford Lake. The female and male guests were separated, as prescribed by Orthodox Jewish tradition, under two peaked white tents to witness the ceremony.

Chaya Epstein, 22, of Columbia, and Mendy Moscowitz, a 23-year-old rabbi from Chicago, recently wed on a beautiful spring afternoon in Columbia's first Chassidic wedding, an event that one visiting rabbi from California declared "an absolutely historic moment in Columbia."

"This represents a community coming into its own," said Rabbi David Eliezrie, of Yorba Linda, Ca.

Orthodox Jewish ritual included the reading of the marriage contract, the veiling of the bride, the ceremonial circuit around the bridegroom, the giving of the bride's ring, the seven blessings and the final breaking of the wine glass and the welcome shouts of Mazel Tov!"

Rabbi Baruch Hertz, leader of congregation Bnei Ruven in Chicago officiated; his father had married the parents of the bride 27 years ago. Rabbi Baruch Epstein of Chicago, father of the groom, Hesh Epstein's, brother, reminded those gathered that while men are traditionally physical protectors of women, "on the transcendent level it is women who protect men."

Chavi Epstein, the bride's mother resplendent in a soft brown Chantilly lace and silk gown, has sent her nine children off, one by one as they came of age, to attend rabbinical schools in places like New York and Chicago. Now, her daughter had returned to be wed in her hometown.

"It was fantastic," she said, "unifying - it's life, living here, our connection to God. It's our whole life; it's completely in sync with everything we do."

The Orthodox rabbis and their families came from New York and Chicago, from North Carolina, Florida and Texas, England and Israel to witness the outdoor marriage at the home of Shep Cutler in Forest Lake. Many members of the Columbia Jewish community - Reform, Conservative, Orthodox - were in attendance, experiencing an elaborate wedding ritual rooted in ancient biblical and Orthodox Jewish custom.

"You know your Bible?" Eliezrie, of Yorba Linda, Calif., asked, as the groom, accompanied by his father, Rabbi Hesh Epstein, and future father-in-law, Rabbi Moshe Moscowitz, prepared to veil the bride before the ceremony. That tradition of confirming the identity of the bride is rooted in the Genesis story of Laban, who tricks Jacob into marrying his eldest daughter Leah instead of Rachel, thus ensuring Jacob would work for him for another seven years.

Chaya's full length wedding gown, white French lace with a silk cream lining, had special meaning because it has been shared by three friends from her high school class. The face covering, or bedeken, was lined with a special piece of fabric that came from the home of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, the seventh leader in the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.

"He was the inspiration that sent the Epsteins to South Carolina," said Penina Efune, aunt of the bride.

Hesh Epstein first came to Columbia in the late 1980s, along with his childhood friend Rabbi Meir Muller, as part of an Chabad outreach mission. Their presence drew curiosity and, perhaps, a little suspicion among Jews and non-Jews, but over time the Epsteins and Mullers integrated into the broader Columbia community as religious leaders and teachers. With their growing families, the two reopened the Jewish Community Center's pre-school, transforming it into the Columbia Jewish Day School, which now educates children through the 5th grade. Chaya Epstein attended that school.

After the ceremony under the chupah, the bride and groom were led up to a room on the second floor of the Eastshore Drive home where the wedding was held. There they spent some quiet time before the joyous reception and night of dancing at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

"The wedding is not complete until they do this, go into the room and lock the door," said Rabbi Shlomo Cohen, of Charlotte, N.C., noting that the bride and groom have not seen each other or spoken to each other for seven days. "It's like a spiritual moment."

"Afterward, at the dinner and dancing, that is when the joy bursts out," Cohen said. "It's a different kind of intense joy."

The couple doesn't leave for a traditional honeymoon. Instead, they went to Chicago to spend the week in celebration with family and friends.

Samsung Galaxy Tabs to get Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade by August

June 23, 2012, 7:46 AM ? Several of Samsung's Galaxy Tabs will finally join the Ice Cream Sandwich update party next month.

According to SamMobile, Android 4.0 is coming soon to Samsung's Galaxy Tab Plus 7.0, Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1. The updates will start rolling out in July, but an August arrival is likely for most users.

Unfortunately, the upgrade list only mentions Wi-Fi and international 3G models, so owners of Verizon Wireless' 4G Galaxy Tabs may have to wait longer. And as Samsung announced before, the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab from 2010 will not get the update.

Hardware makers have moved slowly in delivering Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades to users. Although these companies have promised upgrades for most of their dual-core phones and tablets, few devices have actually received the latest software. According to Google, only about 7 percent of devices that accessed Google Play in the last two weeks are running Android 4.0 or higher.

In theory, upgrades for Wi-Fi tablets shouldn't take so long to deliver, since there are no wireless carrier approvals to draw out the process, but that's not the case here. While competing 2011 tablets from Acer, Asus and Motorola have received upgrades, Samsung tablet owners are still waiting. At least they won't have to wait much longer.

A gathering of secular-leaning politicians criticized on Saturday what they said was U.S. meddling on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood, which has claimed victory. Other secularists have stood behind the Islamist group, calling it the likely legitimate winner and the best hope in the current circumstances against continued military domination of the country.

The dispute highlights how the country has been split into deeply polarized camps since the June 16-17 runoff vote between the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Morsi and ousted leader Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, with both campaigns claiming victory by a narrow margin.

Many Egyptians have rallied behind Morsi as a chance to finally rid the country of the old Mubarak regime, while others support Shafiq as the best bet to counter Islamists and restore order after a year of protests, economic hardship, and fear about crime and continued instability.

But there is little hope that the results will produce an end to 16 months of political turmoil. A Morsi victory will likely see the new civilian government fight for its authority against a military that has ensured that its powers persist past the transition. A Shafiq victory will be seen by large sections of the public as illegitimate, as he is perceived as the favored candidate of the military rulers that appointed the election commission.

The commission postponed official results that had been scheduled to be announced on Thursday, leading to speculation that the military rulers are using those results as a bargaining chip in backroom negotiations with the Brotherhood about post-election division of powers.

In addition to a Morsi or Shafiq victory, a third possibility is that Egypt remains in political limbo: The elections commission may decide to annul the runoff vote and call for new elections in some or all constituencies due to allegations of irregularities by both sides.

Farouk Sultan, the head of the Supreme Presidential Election Commission, said Saturday the results would be announced the next day but did not give further details.

Underlying the tensions are a series of rulings and decrees just before and during the vote that have been perceived as a push by the military to monopolize power and leave the president with only limited authority.

The military has pledged to hand over power to civilian rule by July 1. But on June 15, the country's highest court dissolved the country's Islamist-led parliament, calling the law under which it had been elected unconstitutional. Two days later the generals issued a declaration in which they gave themselves legislative powers, including control over drafting a constitution.

Brotherhood leaders say the military is holding the election results hostage to get the movement to accept the power grab.

On Saturday, Maj. General Mahmdouh Shaheen, a member of the ruling council and its legal adviser, would not comment on negotiations with the Brotherhood. He said there are no plans to amend the constitutional declaration entrenching the executive and legislative powers of the generals.

"There is no amending of the constitutional declaration. It is just like the constitution," he told The Associated Press.

The Brotherhood meanwhile has compiled what it says is a detailed breakdown of election results proving Morsi's victory. Leaders of the Islamist group have called their followers to Cairo's Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising that overthrew Mubarak. Along with some secular-leaning activist groups, the protesters have vowed "a new revolution" if Shafiq is the winner, claiming that a loss would prove that election fraud was orchestrated by the military.

The ruling generals accused Islamists of stirring tension and threatened to crack down on any violence by any group unhappy with the election outcome.

For the sixth straight day, thousands of Morsi supporters and critics of the military held a rally in Tahrir Square, endorsing his victory and calling on the military to rescind its recent decisions and restore the dissolved parliament.

Across town, thousands of supporters of Shafiq and the military held a parallel rally in Nasr City, north of Cairo, outside the parade reviewing stands where former president Anwar Sadat was assassinated by radical Islamists in 1981. This was the largest show of force by pro-Shafiq, pro-military demonstrators since the election.

They raised Egyptian flags and posters of Shafiq and chanted, "Down, down with the rule of the Guide," referring to the title of the Brotherhood's movement leader.

Rumors have circulated about preparations for violence by both sides, feeding the tense atmosphere. Postings on the social networking sites of Facebook and Twitter warned Egyptians that the security apparatus is training thugs inside their camps to use them to break up protests when the results are announced.

The independent Al-Youm Al-Sabaa daily's website said that authorities reinforced the security presence near the headquarters of the elections commission, deploying troops and explosives experts.

Groups who have opposed both Mubarak and the Islamists ? liberals, leftists, secularists, and others ? are divided.

Some youth groups and liberal figures say they have joined ranks with Islamists for the sake of democracy. They say they have received assurances from Morsi that he will form a national unity government headed by an independent.

Mostafa Shawki, a leading protester, said he met with Morsi to stand with him against the military. "We are not forming a front with the Brotherhood or a union of any kind," he said. "If Morsi is announced victor, we will be his fiercest opposition."

Others accuse the Brotherhood of "hijacking" the revolution and accused the United States of trying to sway the results in favor of Islamists.

On Saturday, a bloc of liberal and leftist parties represented in the disbanded parliament? the Free Egyptians, the Tagammu, and the National Democratic Front ? held a news conference accusing the Brotherhood of trying to blackmail elections officials with street demonstrations.

"We have to protect the revolution from those who want to hijack it," said Osama el-Ghazali Harb of the National Democratic Front. "The rallies in the square reflect only lack of confidence, and an attempt to force the results in advance ... Real democracy means the courage to accept defeat."

Many liberals see the Brotherhood's newfound spirit of confrontation and inclusiveness as hypocritical. The group backed the military's transition plan throughout most of last year and was also perceived to try to dominate the drafting of the constitution.

During Saturday's press conference, liberals accused the United States of putting pressure on the ruling military council to hand power to the Brotherhood.

"We have seen the US forcing military council to hand power to the Brotherhood," Harb said. Activist Mahmoud al-Allali said U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton "is giving directions and instructions, directly and sharply."

On Wednesday, Clinton had demanded that the military "support the democratic transition, to recede by turning over authority."

Clinton spoke against the military's attempts to keep a strong grip on power and said, "The military has to assume an appropriate role, which is not to try to interfere with, dominate or subvert the constitutional authority."

U.S. officials had earlier expressed concern that a Shafiq victory could have dangerous fallout, with protests and ensuing instability that could lead the military to take even stronger measures. The officials spoke earlier on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Destiny or Fate

Hello, I am The Great Thundorz. I have made two roleplays so far, hoping for this to become the third. I am taking this chance to test out the interest check and to try out a sort of open world roleplay. I have decided to call the roleplay Destiny or Fate to represent one of the themes of the RP.

So, what will you as the player be able to do and how will it matter in the RP? The nice thing for you is, there are no set roles within it. You can start off as a good and honest person, a nasty and hate filled person, all up to you! D or F's main storyline also gives you as the player a purpose to go off on an adventure, again, not mattering what your intentions are. Already your name will become big for doing this, but what you do on the journey is the most important thing for gaining reputation, or even losing reputation if you prefer to remain hidden.

I can't seem to come up with anymore to say about it, but I do have one more thing to show if your still not interested. I will let the roleplay do the talking for me now, and show you a part of what will come, while also revealing some of the main storyline, and maybe even some about the world of D or F.

--- Our time was over when the last war ended, and the king of our world was finally slain. He had plunged himself into the darkness, in his own attempt to save us, and corrupted the land. He had no wife or heir, and the people fought with one another over who should take the throne in his place. The Observer, our guardian and hero of the war, took the old king's sword and broke it into six pieces. Each piece but one was reforged into a new but weaker sword, and the Observer hid them away around the land. When he appeared before us, he told us of a way to settle who would become the one to sit in the throne. 'Whoever shall find the final piece and pulls it from it's resting place shall become the ruler of the land. To find this piece, you must find it's five brothers and they're chosen wielders.'

Leaving behind only a map of where to start, the entire nation went in search for the five swords. For 50 years, different people have found the swords and found the final piece, but none have been able to free it. Now with the five swords lost again, people have given up, leaving the final piece and it's location behind. The Observer has also vanished, leaving behind a supposed son who once a year takes a group of champions with him. Only time will tell now whether the land will further plunge into darkness or whether someone will be able to pull out the final piece. ---

TORONTO (AP) ? The first BlackBerry device running Research In Motion Ltd.'s new operating software will not have a physical keyboard, only a touch-screen one.

The BlackBerry 10 software will be offered on devices with physical keyboards in the future, but RIM spokeswomen Rebecca Freiburger declined to say when. RIM is expected to start selling BlackBerry 10 touch-screen devices this year.

Top-selling smartphones these days, including Apple Inc.'s iPhone and several running Google's Android software, also lack physical keyboards. But RIM's attempts in the past to offer touch-only phones have largely flopped.

Many corporate users have stuck with the BlackBerry solely because of its physical keyboard, given a perception that it's harder to type emails on a touch screen. The BlackBerry 10 system has already been delayed about a year, and with additional delays to get a physical keyboard, those people may not be willing to wait any longer, especially as the iPhone makes greater in-roads in corporate settings. Those users may simply get the new iPhone expected this fall.

RIM's hopes hang on the BlackBerry 10 system, which is meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience customers now demand. The Canadian company is preparing to launch the new software later this year, just as North Americans are abandoning BlackBerrys for iPhones and Android devices.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, called it puzzling that RIM isn't leading with its strength by releasing a keyboard BlackBerry first.

"The physical keyboard is the most dominant item that separates out Research In Motion from its competitors," Gillis said. "If you are not playing to your historical strengths you may find it more difficult to get traction."

Gillis said there is a spot in the market for RIM but the company "just got to get it together."

But Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said BlackBerry 10 is all about touch and closing the gap with Apple, so people should not be surprised that the initial model will have only a touch screen.

"They are going to build a BlackBerry device with a keyboard, but it's just going to take longer," Misek said. "Maybe it will come a month or two after, but frankly it might be already too late."

RIM once dominated the corporate smartphone market but failed to adapt to the emerging "bring your own device" trend, in which employees use their personal iPhones or Android devices for work instead of relying on BlackBerrys issued by their employers. As the movement caught on, the iPhone made the BlackBerry look ancient.

RIM's future is far from certain as its flagship devices rapidly lose market share to flashier phones. With more than $2 billion in cash, bankruptcy seems unlikely in the near term. But RIM's U.S. share of the smartphone market fell sharply from 44 percent in 2009 to 10 percent in 2011 according to market researcher NPD Group.

RIM said Wednesday it has started laying off employees as part of a restructuring plan aimed at saving about $1 billion this year.

RIM's stock fell 18 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $10.15 in afternoon trading Thursday.

Google Mistakenly Outs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as Next OS

If there was any question over what the nickname of Google's next version of Android would be, those questions are pretty much over today. According to Google's own online storefront, Google Play, that Android 4.1 will be called Jelly Bean.

You've probably already noticed, but Twitter went down for a while today. In theory, this means that productivity should have?skyrocketed around the world???as soon as we all stopped frantically trying to refresh our Twitter feeds.

We don't know much about the outage, but Twitter did add a message to its official status page, pointing out that "users may be experiencing issues accessing" the social networking service when things came crashing down. Some users were seemingly?able to access Twitter through mobile.twitter.com?throughout the outage, though.

Twitter engineers got to work quickly and at this point the site appears to be sluggishly coming back to life.?

In the aftermath of this social media tragedy, I offer my sympathies to anyone who is suffered Twitter withdrawal symptoms like I am and invite him or her to seek comfort on my or on msnbc.com tech's Facebook pages.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Ashton Kutcher's production company is suing because it isn't being allowed to spend more time at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Katalyst Media Inc.'s breach of contract lawsuit accuses the California DMV of reneging on a deal to film a reality series focused on the much-maligned government agency and its customers.?

The company produced Kutcher's show "Punk'd" and some of the actor's other projects and claims it is owed more than $1.4 million on the deal.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Los Angeles.

It states the DMV backed out of the reality show on claims it was no longer in the agency's best interests, but it had already been promised to the TruTV channel.?

DMV spokesman Mike Marando says the agency does not comment on active lawsuits.
