Law professor Rebecca Tushnet interviewed about fanfic on Reason ...

Fanfic and other original Internet fiction were some of the very first ?e-books?, but ever since copyright owners have started paying more attention to the Internet the relationship with fans has sometimes been a thorny one.

Reason TV has a 7.5-minute interview with Rebecca Tushnet, Georgetown University law professor and long-time legal advocate for fanfiction. (She wrote an article for a law journal back in the ?90s that I believe is one of the first places fanfic was mentioned positively in a legal context.) At the moment, Professor Tushnet is a member of the Organization for Transformative Works, a legal nonprofit dedicated to defending and furthering the cause of fanfic writers.

The interview also touches on some of the problems with today?s extremely-lengthened copyright and restrictive laws like the DMCA. All in all, very interesting viewing.

What US states permit someone limited by mobility, without a car or driver?s license, to sell life insurance?

I have had positive reactions from 2 firms in life insurance to my resume.

You can compare quotes from different companies for free at: Usa insurance quotes

All. Being physically disabled in anyway, does not preclude you from holding an insurance license. Steven Hawking could get one if he wanted.

Having a driver?s license is also irrelevant. If you are *prohibited* from having a license because of tickets, DUI, or something, you might have problems getting an insurance license, however.
Any of them. You don?t need a car or a driver?s license, or to be wildly mobile, to sell life insurance. Of course, it?s harder to close the deal, if you?re working ONLY via mail, or making them come to you.

Sweet & Savory: 15 Minute Smoky Spaghetti Carbonara

If you follow my blog regularly, you may have seen this pasta dish last week, hinting that I'd give you the recipe for it this week.

Well, here it is!

I was honored to feature this recipe on the Quad City Moms Blog last week as a guest post. ?And since that post, I was asked to join them later today to tape a cooking segment for WQAD and their blog. ?I'm beyond nervous, but very excited. ?Wish me luck.

Back to this pasta. ?I actually have a niece that doesn't like red sauce. ?(We are still trying to figure out what is wrong with her...). ?So I'm thinking she may like this dish, as there is NO hint of red, just a creamy, salty, yummy sauce.

What's even better is this dish is made in 15 minutes and is very easy. ?I'm thinking most kids would enjoy it too - mine did! ?And I might mention that it is good cold. ?I may have eaten some cold the next day for lunch. ?Sorry, I couldn't help it.

15 Minute Smoky Spaghetti Carbonara

1/2 lb. bacon, pancetta or ham (finely cubed)

1 small onion, diced

1 1/4 c. Parmesan cheese

1/4 c. milk

2 eggs

splash of hot sauce

pepper

fresh parsley

In a large skillet, cook the meat over medium-high heat until crisp, about 5 minutes. ?Drain on paper towel-lined plate. ?Take the skillet off the heat, but do not drain the fat. ?Add onions to this skillet and cook until softened.

In a small bowl whisk together cheese, milk, eggs, hot sauce and black pepper, set aside. ?Meanwhile in a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta according to directions, drain and reserve 1 cup of cooking water (in case you need to thin out the sauce later).

Once the pasta is cooked (but still hot), add all ingredients back into the skillet or hot pot - pasta, meat, onion and small bowl with cheese/egg mixture. ?Toss everything together to combine. ?The heat from the pasta will thicken into a creamy sauce. ?If too thick, add a little of the pasta water. ?Garnish with fresh parsley, and serve hot.

And just to entertain you a little more, this past weekend I went to Galena, IL with some girlfriends for a day of shopping and eating. ?Lots of shopping and lots of eating. ?I'll be sharing more wonderful shots of me later this week in a recap.

We didn't eat at this burger joint but I wanted to.

PINK FLOYD London - Live 66-67 music review by Mellotron Storm

4 stars I had a hard time finding this EP on the site here not realizing it would be located in the video section. I haven't even seen the video yet and i only bought this for the two long tracks from 1966/67. Man was this worth getting ! I couldn't help but think of Pete Townsend(THE WHO) who used to go to the UFO Club often to see THE PINK FLOYD during this period of time. He loved how dark, psychedelic, powerful and experimental they were live on stage. And these two long tracks certainly represent what he was talking about. Pete thought "Pipers At The Gates Of Dawn" was awful, complete rubbish because he was expecting the same music that he witnessed live not a bunch of silly pop songs.

I will eventually get to the video footage one day but first up on the cd is "Interstellar Overdrive" apparently recorded at the UFO Club in 1966. The intro certainly gets your attention then they get into this steady groove before a minute. I really like the organ here. Experimental sounds after 5 minutes then the organ and guitar turn aggressive before 7 1/2 minutes but not for long. A much fuller sound 10 1/2 minutes in and the guitar starts to light it up. Syd is amazing on this recording with his acid drenched freak outs. It settles back after 11 1/2 minutes. The guitar comes to the fore again before 13 minutes then it settles a minute later. It kicks in hard before 16 minutes.

"Nick's Boogie" opens with the drums beating in a dark atmosphere as the guitar expressions come and go. Love Syd's playing. It settles into a haunting soundscape around 7 minutes in. The guitar is insane 9 1/2 minutes in as Syd takes the spotlight. The drums with that dark atmosphere from the intro are back to end it.

I absolutely loved this. For me it means so much to hear this side of the band back in 1966/67 because this is how they were on stage back then. It would have been amazing to have been there.

The current trend of the world has resulted in the internet becoming a major part of life, these days. As a matter of fact, all first world and many developing countries are already dependent on the internet for a wide variety of things. The dominance of the internet spans all aspects of society including economical, social and even political. Owing to such a background, it is not surprising that a number of entrepreneurs in the world want to enter the online world. If you have similar aims, then you would have pay close attention to the facet of web marketing.

Without proper internet marketing methods, no online business can succeed. Why this occurs is that internet marketing is the main cause behind people visiting an online business. Despite the fact that there are numerous online marketing techniques, they are mostly simple to put in place. Realistically speaking, they are easy to master and put in place. Analyze the following.

    Post blogs on your website:

One of the easiest internet marketing methods in the world is to put up blog posts on your internet business. By putting up blog content on your internet business, you would be on the receiving end of two great benefits. The most obvious benefit of writing blog content is that you would be able to make direct contact with your customers. Connecting with the audience directly means you're your business would get more sales and, hence, flourish. The second benefit is that by putting up regular top class content, you would find yourself ranking better on all the established search engines.

Make use of articles to create relevant backlinks:

One of the most established methods of web marketing is article marketing. There exist directories on the World Wide Web that allow free posting of articles from any online businessman. The main reason why article directories should be used is that they allow an entrepreneur to not only get backlinks for search engines but also create a stream of click through traffic. Still, this method would only work if your posts are of great quality. This implies that you should either pen the articles yourself or get some experts to do it for you.

Sign up and start contributing on forums:

Contributing to the right discussion boards can also be seen as one of the most handy web marketing methods that most business owners utilise these days. In the majority of cases, an online discussion board would have people who are already interested in a particular subject. This means that a forum on insurance would mainly have people who either already hold policies or are planning to buy one. Thus, if you are selling insurance policies through your website then you would do well to sign up with a forum on insurance policies. Additionally, just registering with these forums would not be sufficient and you should regularly post with relevant content.

The benefits of viral video marketing:

When it comes to online marketing, there are only a few techniques that will be able to compete with viral video marketing. The cause for this is that viral videos appeal to the visual sense of the viewers, which is not something that any other method offers. Viral videos can be simply defined as videos that are so entertaining that an individual decides to spread it in his circle. Despite the fact that these types of videos are not profit oriented, they do have information that pushes the sales higher of the business in question.

    Social media marketing methods:

It is a well known fact that social media networking is a global phenomenon in the modern world. As a matter of fact, most of the people who utilise the World Wide Web have an account on some social media network. These social marketing networks include websites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and many other similar ones. Hence, by using social network marketing in your internet marketing strategies, you can guarantee success for your online business.

    Paid banners and advertisements:

Traditional online techniques such as paying for banners, ads and business tie ups can also be of great help.

While the previously mentioned techniques are effective, they are limited by the time and effort that need to be put in them.

Alternatively, paid marketing techniques tend to show results in direct proportion to the amount of money that is invested.

Omar Suleiman, Mubarak intel chief, dies as quietly as he worked

Longtime intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, also former leader Hosni Mubarak's right-hand man and a key US partner in the War on Terror, died in a US hospital today.

    By Kristen Chick,?Correspondent / July 19, 2012

In this file photo, Egyptian chief of intelligence Omar Suleiman is seen upon his departure after a short visit to Khartoum, Sudan. Egypt?s state news agency says the former spy chief and vice president has died in the US.

Although Mr. Suleiman was Mubarak?s right-hand man and oversaw the torture of detainees in his nearly two decades as head of the General Intelligence Directorate, he was never arrested or charged with a crime after the uprising that ousted Mubarak, a testament to the power structure that endured even after Mubarak was toppled. Instead, he ran for president, provoking fears of a return of Mubarak?s regime before he was disqualified from the race.

Some Egyptians expressed satisfaction at Suleiman?s death, though they rued the fact that he was never punished for his crimes, while his band of loyal supporters mourned his passing. His death comes as Egypt?s new president, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood organization that Suleiman worked to suppress, welcomed to Cairo a leader of Hamas, the Brotherhood's Palestinian affiliate that Suleiman tried to?undermine. ?

Omar Ashour, professor of Middle East politics at the University of Exeter, says Suleiman was a divisive figure.

"For prodemocracy activists ... many of them think he was the brain behind?the Mubarak regime's survival. To make this regime survive he became a brutal murderer and torturer," says Dr. Ashour, who is currently in Cairo. "For pro-Mubarak folks, he's seen as a force of stability and a hurdle to Islamist advance." For many, "he is the guy who tried to revive the Mubarak regime."

Suleiman leaves a legacy in Egypt's intelligence agencies of focusing them on domestic matters, rather than external threats, says Ashour. "I?think his most important impact on the Egyptian Intelligence is his change of [the organization's] creed; change of dogma to perceive that the Islamists are the most critical threat, not any other entity, whether Israel or the Mossad."

Suleiman served as an army officer before moving to Egypt?s powerful intelligence agency, where he spent nearly two decades at the helm, most of them cloaked in secrecy. In the later years of Mubarak?s rule, Suleiman took on a more public role, and was often mentioned as a possible successor to Mubarak. He handled several foreign policy files, including relations with Palestinian factions, and was usually seen in public in that capacity.

Mubarak appointed Suleiman vice president during the uprising against his rule in an attempt to quell the protests and tasked him with negotiating with protester groups and the Muslim Brotherhood during the uprising.?It was Suleiman who gave a televised address announcing that Mubarak had stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011. Afterward, he disappeared from public view, only to reemerge as a presidential candidate the next year. Despite ? or perhaps because of ? his connection to Mubarak, he attracted loyal supporters. But officials disqualified him from the race for failing to obtain the correct number of signatures on his candidacy forms.

Suleiman was well known to American officials. He was a trusted go-between for Mubarak with the Americans, and also helped US officials with their intelligence needs. A 2006 diplomatic cable from the US embassy in Cairo, revealed by anti-secrecy organization Wikileaks, discusses Suleiman?s desire to see Hamas fail and rival Fatah succeed. ?In this regard, our intelligence collaboration with Omar Soliman ? is now probably the most successful element of the [US-Egypt] relationship,? said the cable.

Suleiman was, like Mubarak, ardently opposed to Islamist groups like Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, and assisted in Mubarak?s crackdowns on the Brotherhood. He also oversaw the extraordinary rendition of terrorism suspects to Egypt from US custody. Under this practice, the US sent suspects to Egypt to be interrogated (and often tortured) and Egypt relayed the information it extracted from the men back to its ally.?

The US delivered one such suspect, Libyan national Ibn Al Shaikh Al Libi, to Egypt for interrogation. According to a declassified CIA cable and a US Senate report, he revealed supposed Al Qaeda ties to Saddam Hussein while under torture. That information, used to bolster the US case for war in Iraq in 2003, turned out to be false.?

Ken Wedding's Reading Blog: Fiction and TV

I'm sort of embarrassed by how much TV I watch. It's a default activity even more common than trolling the Internet. One attraction is that it is so passive, although it's not as passive as it was when there were only half a dozen channels available. (I won't go on about remembering when two broadcasters in Minneapolis/St. Paul shared one channel. That was really ancient times, i.e. before 1955.)

The permanent residents of this house have become fans of a couple television series that remind us of the screwball comedies starring Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. The "remind" is crucial because neither Bones nor Castle is a full-fledged screwball comedy, but they do feature couples, ambiguous relationships, and adequately snappy dialogue. Close enough for network TV.

Both also have links to novels. Temperance Brennan, the main character in Bones, is based on the protagonist of Kathy Reichs crime novels. And the Brennan character is a successful mystery writer, as well as an irritating polymath. Things are more complicated in Castle.

Andrew Marlowe is the creator and producer of Castle, the television series. One of the main characters in that series is Richard Castle, a writer of mystery and romance novels. But, if you look in a book store or at Amazon, you'll find that Hyperion has published four crime/mystery novels featuring the main characters of the television series, Kate Beckett, a New York City detective and Richard Castle, author. The televison series characters in those books are called Nikki Heat and Jameson Rook. And just to cement the illusion, actor Nathan Fillon, who plays Richard Castle on TV is pictured on the back cover as Richard Castle, the author of the Nikki Heat books.

I get seriously confused if I try to keep this all straight when watching television. It's worse when reading one of "Richard Castle's" books. But that's what I did. I read Naked Heat by "Richard Castle." (Online speculation about who actually writes these books is rampant. The best one I read suggests that creator Andrew Marlowe is the writer. He credits his wife in the acknowledgements as "co-conspirator." And Marlowe gets writing credit for 79 of 81 episodes.)

?Naked Heat reads like a book-length treatment of an episode of the series. There are the requisite snappy lines once in awhile. There are the murders, the suspects, the bad guys, and the red herrings. The relationship between Heat and Rook is not as ambiguous as the one between Beckett and Castle. The ambiguity is reduced in ways you might expect the Castle character to write it.

But, an episode of Castle lasts 43 minutes. The book is nearly 300 pages. Things move slowly in the book. Discussions among the detectives are much more interesting when they quickly take place on screen than when they drag out in print. Quick cuts between scenes on TV work better than blind transitions on the printed page. This plot might work well as an episode on TV. Maybe it has, because I haven't watched all 81 episodes. ?

Naked Heat was entertaining if not engrossing. I don't think I'll go looking for the other "Richard Castle" books. I will probably watch new episodes on TV, although I expect there aren't many left. As the Castle-Beckett relationship becomes less ambiguous on the television screen, one element of the tension that holds things together (or apart, if you prefer) will disappear. And so will the television series.

?I'm sure I'll find something else to watch (if not read).

Have you read Naked Heat or another of "Richard Castle's" books? ?

Write and tell this little bit of the world what you thought.

    Daily Kos: GFHC: Tintype Photos

Wanna play detective? Then help me date the photos below. My hope is that a date will help me identify the people in these photos. I'm not expecting a specific date; a reasonably narrow range, like 10 to 20 years is probably the best I can hope for.

All photos embiggen and link to my Photobucket account. A tip: if you use Firefox, right click to view image, then hold down ctrl and scroll up with the mouse and you'll get an even bigger image than Photobucket allows.

I found these photos in an album while I visited with my ailing mother recently. Unfortunately, she is no longer able to identify the people in the photos. That's where y'all come in. I'm hoping someone will be able to narrow down the date from the clothing, hairstyles, whatnot, and I'll try to see if I can match it to someone in my family tree.

All, but one, are tintype photos. Photo 6 was from my mom's computer and appears to be a paper photograph, judging from the dog-eared corner and a torn-out piece on the left side.

I won't go into the technical aspects of tintype photography, but for the uninitiated (like me), and to put it simply, tintype photos are made of very thin sheets of metal. Their corners were usually snipped off or blunted, like the ones above, because they were very sharp. Different sources disagree on whether or not tin was actually one of the metals used, but iron was the most common. Another name for it is ferrotype. They were cheaper and quicker to produce than the fragile daguerreotypes, and became more common.

Just a FYI from The Daguerreian Society

Daguerreotypes (1840-1855) are on polished silver so they are very reflective, like a mirror. Since they are on silver and subject to tarnish, daguerreotypes were put behind glass and sealed with paper tape so air cannot tarnish the plate (there often is some tarnish around the edges of the picture). This was then put into a small hinged case, similar to a woman's compact. But, the easiest way to tell if you have a daguerreotype is to see if it has that reflection, just like a mirror. You have to tilt it back and forth to see the image
Here below is a modern-day video showing how tintype photos were made. Note the neck brace used to keep the subject still.

Tintype was patented in 1856. The time range for when they were in use varies from one source to the next:

family-lore: Although the heyday for tintype photographs faded in the 1860s, tintype photo studios were still around into the early 1900s as a novelty.
ehow: Tintypes were wildly popular for just a few decades, but remained in use until the 1950s.
Wikipedia: Ferrotypes waned in popularity by the end of the 19th century, relegated to niche markets...
    Phototree: Appeared: 1855; Peaked: 1861-1871; Waned: 1872-1900
Phototree is an interesting site, full of antique photos and grouped into different categories (some questionable), but it didn't really tell me how to narrow down the dates. Maybe someone with a sharp eye for history and fashion knows what to look for.

Keep in mind that these are photos of the tintypes, and I don't have the actual tintypes in my possession. As far as I can recall, I think I did check the backs of all of them, and they all had a black coating, with no discernible markings, except for a few scratches and some spots of black album paper glued to them. I don't have them to measure now, but I'd say they are 1/6 Plate - 2 5/8" x 3 1/4", to use the sizes from Phototree. All photos were edited and enhanced for better viewing.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack is by far the most memorable moment shared by television viewers during the past 50 years, a study released on Wednesday concluded.

The only thing that came close was President John F. Kennedy's assassination and its aftermath in 1963, but that was only for the people aged 55 and over who experienced those events as they happened instead of replayed as an historical artifact.

Sony Electronics and the Nielsen television research company collaborated on the survey. They ranked TV moments for their impact not just by asking people if they remembered watching them, but if they recalled where they watched it, who they were with and whether they talked to other people about what they had seen.

By that measure, the Sept. 11 tragedy was nearly twice as impactful as the second-ranked moment, which was the coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Minutes after the first airplane struck New York's World Trade Center on a late summer morning, television networks began covering the events continuously and stayed with them for days.

The other biggest TV events, in order, were the 1995 verdict in O.J. Simpson's murder trial, the Challenger space shuttle explosion in 1986 and the death of Osama bin Laden last year, the survey found.

Sony was interested in the study for clues on consumer interests and behaviors and found "that television is really the grandmother of all the social devices," said Brian Siegel, vice president of television business for the company.

Going into the study, Siegel said he had anticipated that entertainment events like the final episode of "M-A-S-H" (ranked No. 42), the Beatles' appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" (No. 43) and the "Who shot J.R.?" episode of "Dallas" (No. 44) would rank higher. Instead, television coverage of news events made the biggest difference in viewers' lives.

The Super Bowl is annually the most-watched TV event, with this year's game between the N.Y. Giants and New England Patriots setting an all-time record with 111 million viewers. The memories don't seem to linger, however: the top-ranked Super Bowl Sunday event in Sony's study came in 2004 and had nothing to do with football. It was Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction (No. 26).

Men and women agreed on the three most impactful television events ? Sept. 11, Katrina and Simpson. After that, some of the interests diverged.

For example, women ranked the 1997 funeral of Princess Diana as the fourth most memorable event, while men put that at No. 23. Women ranked last year's death of Whitney Houston at No. 5, with men judging it No. 21.

Similarly, the 2003 bombing of Baghdad at the start of the Iraq War was seen as the No. 14 most impactful moment by men, and No. 37 among women. Men were also far more struck by boxer Mike Tyson biting off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear.

The passage of time has also diluted some moments once thought as unforgettable, simply because succeeding generations have no personal memory of them. Man's first moon landing in 1969 ranked No. 21.

Age also made a big difference in the survey. JFK's assassination was the second-most impactful TV event among people 55 and over, while for those between 18 and 34, it was the death of Osama bin Laden.

Young people also ranked Barack Obama's Election Night speech in 2008 at No. 3, while that didn't move older viewers quite as much (No. 24).

Simply because of their age, events like the JFK assassination, President Nixon's resignation and the moon landing didn't register at all among viewers 18 to 34. The oldest event to appear in their rankings was the 1980 shooting of John Lennon.

The study was based on an online questionnaire of 1,077 adults selected as a scientific sample from among Nielsen's panel of people measured for television ratings. It was conducted between Feb. 15-17 this year.

The study could be a good baseline for future looks at how television impacts viewers, said Paul Lindstrom, senior vice president for custom research at Nielsen.

"I'd like to see these done on a periodic basis going forward," he said.

Japanese company releasing doityourself Pius electric vehicle, name sounds vaguely familiar

That homemade bug-zapping lightsaber not quite floating your boat? Then how about building your own electric vehicle? That's the opportunity that MODI Corporation in Japan hopes to sell when its "Pius" kit car -- not to be confused with the Toyota Prius -- becomes available next spring. Specs from the official site for the "micro compact car" reveal a vehicle that's 885mm tall, 1,230mm wide and 2,500mm long. Range on a full charge is 25 kilometers or a little over 15 miles. Top speed is 35km/h, which sadly disqualifies it from the list of vehicles Doc Brown can use for time travel. The company expects to sell the one-seater to colleges and mechanic schools for use as a learning tool on how EVs work. MODI Corporation hasn't provided pricing for the vehicle but announced that it will be available in six colors, including white, red and blue. Yes, it isn't quite up to snuff with Drayson Racing's 850-horsepower B12/69EV. Then again, we don't think they have do-it-yourself kits for that one.

Google Maps soaks in some culture with indoor guides to museums

Google Maps soaks in some culture with indoor guides to museums

Google Maps for Android was recently updated their indoor location database with over twenty popular museums across the U.S, including the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cincinnati Museum Center, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, and 17 Smithsonian museums.

Indoor maps originally launched in November, allowing users to set routes within buildings, navigate by floor, and sort through points of interest. It's an awesome feature, and a sensible extension of Google's current walking directions. Who knows, maybe indoor maps will expand to include audio guides that are sensitive to where you are within a building.

A full list of indoor Google Maps is available here, and if you're really into art, be sure to check out the Google Art Project. If you have the latest version of Google Maps for Android, you should be ready to start planning your next museum trip. Do you go often? Which buildings would you like to see with full indoor maps?

The Miracle of Garlic | Veggie Buntch: Vegetarian and vegan recipes ...

Garlic has always been deemed as a miracle herb as it contains powerful antioxidants which destroy bacteria and in the case of our pets, helps get rid of fleas and ticks.

A number of years ago, articles and discussions relating to onion and garlic and its link to Heinz-body anemia (the thinning of the blood) started emerging. These studies suggested that if dogs eat garlic and onions, this could contribute to this anemia.

The confusion about garlic, I suspect, came after the major recall of most of the commercial pet food brands a few years ago, when melamine was found in pet food. After that, many people moved away from commercial processed food and moved towards natural, home-prepared meals. From what I can see, the industry retaliated by disseminating misleading information to recover market share, which included ridiculous claims about the dangers of garlic.

There was a time that we had full confidence in garlic to sort out many ailments and protect our pets from parasites, but now we are not sure which way to turn.

Let me put this subject to rest, once and forever.

What is clear is that most of the claims about the dangers of garlic were linked to research that fed animals excessive quantities.

Like everything in life, anything in excess is dangerous.

In one of the main studies published in Materia Medica, garlic and onions were tested in a laboratory for their relation to Heinz-body anemia. The important finding was that the dangers were dose dependent, ?typically involving doses exceeding 0.5% of the subject animal?s body weight?. This means that a 20kg dog would have to consume a minimum of 100g of onion or garlic (two whole onions or a quarter container of garlic) just to start the Heinz-body process. ?This grotesque overdose would probably have to be repeated several times on a frequent basis to cause permanent harm?.

Secondly, they also concluded that ?small doses of garlic are probably going to be of great benefit to the overall health of your pet .?

It was also noted that while onions are classified as part of the garlic family, the actual properties of garlic were different and potentially less ?dangerous? than onions.

In summary, most reasonable pet owners will include only reasonable quantities of garlic in their pet?s meal.?Garlic is a miracle herb and includes a powerful natural disinfectant which helps to destroy harmful bacteria in the animal?s system and helps detoxify the body. It also tones the lymphatic cells and helps purify the bloodstream and intestines. It prevents viruses from multiplying and creates hostile conditions that repel most parasites and strengthens the immune system.

The only exceptions are pets that have an existing Heinz-body anemia ailment and for puppies under the age of 6 weeks (they should be suckling at that age anyway).

Al-Qaida's 'Mr Theology' released from prison

    By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

Abu Hafs al Mauritani, a former senior adviser to al-Qaida known as 'Mr. Theology', was released from a prison in his home nation of Mauritania in west Africa over the weekend, his family confirmed to the Associated Press.

Sidi Ould Walid said his brother was released after renouncing his ties to the terror network and condemning the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Hafs refused to be interviewed or to be filmed as he left the prison.

On militant forums, jihadists exchanged congratulations over the release.

Hafs was an adviser to Osama Bin Laden who helped form the modern al-Qaida by merging Bin Laden's operation with Ayman al-Zawahri's Islamic Jihad.

Hafs spent years in custody in Iran before being extradited to Mauritania in April. Walid says his brother was interrogated multiple times and his release indicates he is no longer seen as a threat.

An earlier report by the Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies said Abu Hafs' real name is Mahfouz Ould al Walid and he was relocated to Iran after the Taliban's Afghanistan fell in late 2001. It said Iran placed senior al-Qaida leaders under a loose form of house arrest in 2003.

U.S. intelligence officials reported in 2002 that Abu Hafs was killed in an American airstrike, but later said he was alive and in Iran.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Microsoft bets on advanced touch tech in tablet war

    2 hrs.

Microsoft buying Perceptive Pixel last week could easily be dismissed as just another in an endless line of acquisitions by the big movers in tech. But looking a little closer shows that it's part of a trend that may define computing as we know it over the next few years.

One thing that tablet makers have learned over the last few years is that you can't beat the iPad at being the iPad. So Google has focused on being futuristic, Amazon has focused on low cost, and Microsoft has taken two different tacks.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal, but that does not give editors privileged information about Microsoft products and services, nor does it impact our opinions of them.) ?

First, Microsoft has visually differentiated itself with the?Metro UI on Windows Phone and Windows 8. An unmistakable visual style is rarely a drawback. It's striking, divisive ...?and even functional.

Second, Microsoft is focused on capability.?That's why the Surface is built to be a full-on Windows PC (though the RT version of Windows is limited to a degree that is hard to calculate), complete with keyboard and trackpad. And it's why Microsoft bought Perceptive Pixel, a company that does creative things with touchable surfaces, making them powerful and intuitive interfaces.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal, but that doesn't give us privileged information about Microsoft products and services, nor does it influence our opinion of them.)

Perceptive Pixel was founded by Jeff Han, one of the people in the world who can rightly be called a pioneer in touch-based interfaces. In a now-famous demonstration done at a TED conference in early 2006, he showed off a multi-touch display with many of the gestures and features that would later be lauded on the iPhone and Microsoft's original Surface table.?

Since then the company has continually advanced touchscreen tech and specialized in oversized implementations like CNN's "Magic Wall." And you'd better believe Han and his engineers are interested in things like Kinect and other new technologies; if they were making multi-touch years before it went mainstream, they've got to have some tricks up their sleeves today.

Perceptive Pixel is a young, innovative company that, with luck, is being treated like an invaluable?treasure by the massive, much-slower-moving company that just bought it. Some young blood and some fresh (and exclusive) new ideas could be the difference between Microsoft's tablets being decent?? and their being essential.

Pen input, fingerprint recognition, 3-D displays, complex gestures. These could all be part of your average tablet in a couple years, but Apple wants to keep things simple and Google is already backing away from full-fledged?PCs. Microsoft isn't the only one focusing on next-generation interfaces (see Google Glass), but it clearly has one foot in the past and one in the future. It's possible that hedging of bets might undo them (it might pay off better to go?all-in on traditional computing, or all-in on next-gen), but it may also be that they hit the sweet spot: iPad convenience married to desktop versatility.

Of course, it'll take time before Perceptive Pixel's young blood makes it through Redmond's?immense circulatory system. And any mishandling (as with Skype, where ads were added to calls) could spoil it. But whether they end up digging their own grave or breaking ground on a New Microsoft, they've got shovel in hand, and that counts for something.

Apple talks about a "post-PC era." Microsoft is trying to?bring the PC into that era anyway. Maybe it'll go nicely, maybe it'll go kicking and screaming. Either way, it should make for an interesting couple of years.
