'Mwansa the Great' premiers in Lusaka | Zambia Daily Mail

Mwansa The Great

By PETER CHIKWAMPU
ZAMBIA?s short film, Mwansa the Great has finally premiered in Zambia since it was released two years ago and after winning international following.
The movie, which was shot in Zambia and has won international awards, saw its first local screening last Friday at Ster Kinekor cinema during the launch of the annual Barefeet Arts Festival.
This Zambian movie has become one of the most successful local movies in the history of the Zambian film industry. It has received a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) nominations.
The movie, written and directed by United Kingdom-based upcoming filmmakers Rungano Nyoni, has been screened at over 100 international film festivals, receiving 20 awards and has garnered critical acclaim worldwide for its playful depiction of childhood innocence.
The movie was shot in Chongwe district. It tells a story of an eight-year-old boy who aspires to be a hero and embarks upon a journey to prove his greatness with unexpected consequences. It gives an emotional insight into childhood where fantasy jostles with reality as a young boy?s imagination transforms and empowers everyday life.
Some of the awards Mwansa the Great has won are the Griot Best Short Film and RTVA at the Tarifa African Film Festival 2011 in Spain and Best Short Film, Best Director and Best Editing at the Naoussa International Film Festival in Greece.
Other honours include Special Jury Mention (Curtocircuito International Film Festival 2011), Audience Award (Vienna Independent Shorts 2011), Best Short Film (Film Africa, London 2011), Best International Short Film (CUCSCO Peru 2011) and Jury Special Film (Winterthur Film Festival 2011).
This imaginative movie won many hearts of the viewers that included government officials, representatives from international organisations and local film enthusiasts who wished the movie to be longer than it is.The money to be realised from the sale of the DVDs will be channeled to Yofoso Childrens? Centre in Garden township.
Meanwhile, Barefeet Festival organisers have lined up a series of arts activities ending this Sunday, with a music concert by Slap Dee and Macky II. Barefeet will hold theatrical activities in five townships of Lusaka, which include George, Chawama, Chainda, Misisi and Garden.
Other activities include: Barefeet jungle time, jungle parade ? where over 2,000 youths will parade on the street demonstrating a number of artistic performances under the theme, Crazy Creatures from the Barefeet Jungle and the Jungle fashion show on Saturday at Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
On the closing night, the Lantern Company from UK, Jamaica Youth Theatre and Crown Troupe Africa from Nigeria will join the local artistes to add colour to the grand finale of the festival.

Google Burning Man Doodle: First Google Doodle 14 Years Ago

First Google DoodleWe cover a lot of special search logos here, have been for several years and even covered one this morning. But did you know which was Google's first ever Doodle?

It was designed by Google's co-founders and posted on the Google home page 14 years ago yesterday, on August 30, 1998. It was a tribute to the Burning Man Festival.

Google posted this tidbit on Google+ yesterday saying:

Today happens to be a lesser-known milestone in Google history: the anniversary of the very first doodle, which our founders put up on our homepage to indicate to users that they were at the Burning Man festival. Two of our doodlers met with +The Huffington Post to talk about how doodles are conceived of and created, their favorite doodles and how they measure success by whether they get an email from mom...

You can read the Huffington Post article as well.

That is what kicked off the concept of Google Doodles, just over 14 years ago today.

Afghans among 54 rescued from asylum boat

Afghans were among the 54 survivors from an asylum-seeker boat that disappeared two days ago off the Indonesian coast, but hopes of finding about 100 more missing were fading fast on Friday.

An AFP reporter on a rescue boat said he saw four Afghan survivors and a bodybag on board. They had been in the water for at least 24 hours when they were plucked to safety.

"All survivors, including three with injuries, will be taken to Merak, Indonesia, for medical attention," the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said.

The Australia-bound wooden boat carrying about 150 people including children sent a distress signal early on Wednesday morning. It was about eight nautical miles from the main Indonesian island of Java.

Alerted by Australia, Indonesia sent out a rescue team but 10 hours later abandoned the search. Australian authorities took it up again, and by late Thursday said 55 people had been pulled from the water.

Australian authorities revised the number of survivors down to 54 after learning one of those recovered was dead. They were handed over to Indonesian rescue teams and would be taken to the port of Merak.

But hopes were diminishing of finding anyone else alive after two days in the water.

"We have a window of opportunity -- people can survive in the sea for up to 36, maybe 48 hours," Australian Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare told reporters.

Indonesian and Australian rescuers said they would not abandon the search.

"The standard search period for us is seven days," Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), told AFP.

"We're now focusing efforts on evacuating the survivors. There are three Indonesian boats so far taking part in the rescue -- one Basarnas boat, one navy ship and one marine police boat."

Three merchant ships and two Australian aircraft were also scouring the water, AMSA said.

In Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported that the rickety vessel was organised by a 25-year-old Pakistani people-smuggler.

Australia is facing a steady influx of asylum-seekers arriving by boat, many of whom use Indonesia as a transit hub, paying people-smugglers for passage on leaky wooden vessels after fleeing their home countries.

More than 300 boatpeople have died en route to Australia this year, with vessels being intercepted by the Australian navy on almost a daily basis, including one carrying 31 people late Thursday.

When customer service is more important than the product being ...

In a highly competitive, digitally enhanced world, the provision of service to the customer before, during, and after the purchase is often the critical differentiator in moving the customer from loyalty to advocacy. In fact, the successful companies have reinvented their business models over and again in keeping with technological enhancements to business processes, utilizing software for fast and comprehensive data.

Customer relationship management (CRM)?is a widely implemented model for documenting and managing a company?s interactions with?customers, suppliers, and sales prospects. Technology is used to categorize and automate business processes across?sales,?marketing,?customer service, and?technical support.?This is an efficient and accurate solution that helps establish baseline characteristics of audiences that can then be used to target marketing going forward. However, it only collects the data for which a company creates categories, and the categorization has no company-specific, natural taxonomy or weighting. The technology that comes ahead of CRM, such as Case Management (the ability to direct calls seamlessly) and the measuring of Net Promoters (measured by Net Promoter Score (NPS) after the interaction is critical to the relationship in addition to developing relevant product and servicing strategy.

The use of technology has provided an edge in touching customers at just the right moment, with just the right offer and the emerging channels such as social media, mobile, web are allowing companies to use the right technology, people, and culture to engage and listen like never before.

As noted by Micah Solomon in High-Tech, High-Touch Customer Service: Inspire Timeless Loyalty in the Demanding New World of Social Commerce, ?The stakes are high. Since the advent of the internet, and, most specifically, the broad use of the World Wide Web starting in the mid-1990s, there?s been a dramatic transformation of the competitive landscape. The changes wrought by these new communication and distribution channels are in many ways revolutionary, and they?re causing disruptions akin to those of past revolutions.?

With the advent of the internet arrived the capacity for accuracy, anonymity and fast delivery of products. But, what was notably lacking was any sort of understanding of the customer to correlate future promotions and marketing to their real interests and needs. What was lacking was the relationship that would create ongoing loyalty beyond pricing.

This gap was hardly noticed during the 1990s with booming economic conditions that offered a buyer for every seller and a one way internet solution. Fast-forward to today, where economic changes and challenges have undermined buyer confidence, consumer trust, and the growing ability of the consumers? use of the internet.? Today, buyers are more conscientious in their purchases, using all the tools on the internet to do research. Twenty years ago we had Consumer Report!

Concierge service is the new face of the brand

I think back to the 1950?s when it was the local stores that dominated an individual?s purchasing experience. The shopkeeper was, essentially, the concierge service provider!? They were responsible for knowing their clientele inside and out to stay in business and be profitable.? They had to know what to purchase in order to have on hand what to sell.? They knew their clients by name, recognizing their needs and caring about them personally. Today this exists to the limited few who can afford to shop in boutiques and the higher end retail experience.

Enter the age of electronic personal assistants. The most advertised consumer-facing brand is Siri ? the voice and operating assistant on today?s iPhone. However, this is an evolving and competitive space where mobile-based solutions such as Siri and Google Now are entering a field comprised of more robust and mature concierge solutions that combine technology platforms with discerning selection and real customer service. This space encompasses far more than just access to bottom line pricing. It?s about building relationships.

Apple might revisit, Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose by Tony Hsieh. ? Lol

Apple?s customer service team could use some lessons in personal relationships. They?ve recently moved to a model where software and operating system updates are exclusively downloaded. That would be great if the entire country was equipped with broadband. But it?s not. So, instead, they provide customers with the address of the nearest Apple store to bring in their hardware for an upgrade, even if it means a seventy year old customer has to drive 80 miles round trip! One might ask, ?Which customer segment is your company willing to lose because of flaws in operational process compounded by flaws in customer service??

Indeed, the definition of concierge services is becoming a much more ambiguous space and rapidly changing based on customers? needs and expectations.? The one thing that is not changing is the idea that customer service drives brand loyalty.? This loyalty to brand is becoming embedded in autonomy, actions and attitudes, plus complex technology that run algorithms to anticipate a customer?s needs and preferences. Companies can differentiate brand through superior customer experience, as demonstrated by Amazon.com or other sites that provide personalized suggestions based on prior purchases or input by customers as to their ?favorites.?

Consumer profiles are the benchmark for building brand loyalty, and top-notch customer service is the key to top NPS scores or those much coveted relationships among customers, and let?s not forget the increased share of wallet.

Striking Lonmin workers face Monday deadline to return

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Striking workers at the world's No. 3 platinum producer Lonmin, where 44 people have been killed in a week of violence, face possible dismissal if they do not return to work on Monday, a company spokeswoman said.

Last week, 34 people were gunned down by police in a hail of bullets from automatic weapons when authorities moved in against 3,000 striking workers armed with machetes, spears and handguns who were camped on a hill at Lonmin's Marikana mine, about 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

"The final ultimatum has been extended to Monday, the 20th following Thursday's events," spokeswoman Gillian Findlay said on Sunday.

"Employees may be dismissed if they fail to heed the final ultimatum," she said.

London-based Lonmin accounts for 12 percent of global platinum output. It is already struggling with low prices, weak demand and may miss its annual production target of 750,000 ounces as the quarter to the end of September is typically its best.

The strike was sparked by a turf war between the powerful National Union of Mineworkers and the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, which has accused NUM of caring more about politics than workers in mine shafts.

NUM has been a breeding ground of leaders for the ruling African National Congress party and one of the union's former top officials now sits on Lonmin's board as a non-executive director.

Ten people were killed prior to the police shooting, including a NUM shop steward who was hacked to death.

NUM General Secretary Frans Baleni, on a nationally televised talk show, said on Sunday he was not sure if the miners would return to work.

The deadly protest could also hurt the ANC and its long-standing labor allies by laying bare workers' anger over enduring inequalities in Africa's biggest economy.

Ousted ANC youth leader Julius Malema turned up the heat on his rival President Jacob Zuma at the weekend by telling a group of cheering miners at Marikana that Zuma was more interested in protecting mine owners than workers.

Platinum sells for about $1,440 an ounce but a worker drilling underground at tonnes of rock face to extract it makes less than $500 a month. ?

Zuma has called the killings "shocking" and called for a commission of inquiry to look into the matter.

Zuma has declared a week-long period of mourning from Monday to commemorate the lives of South Africans who have died violently, including those killed at the Lonmin mine.

Striking SAfrican miners remain defiant

MARIKANA, South Africa (AP) ? Striking miners remained defiant Monday, four days after police shot to death 34 of their compatriots, with at least half the strikers staying off the job and dozens of others singing in a paddy wagon on their way to court.

The Lonmin PLC platinum mine extended its ultimatum by a day, saying strikers have until Tuesday to return to work or get fired. The mine said it resumed operations Monday with 30 percent of its workforce.

Women searched for loved ones missing since Thursday's shootings, with many gathered outside a courthouse in hopes their husbands, brothers and sons are alive and among 259 miners awaiting trial. The court decided Monday to continue the hearing Aug. 27, with the miners remaining in custody.

Nombulelo Jali wept hysterically in front of the court and said she could not find her 40-year-old husband Themba Khalo Jali. She said he had been arrested on Thursday.

"We have frantically searched everywhere and we can't locate him. Police took him," 37-year-old Jali said through tears to a reporter from the South African Press Association.

A chorus of wails erupted as trucks carrying the arrested miners arrived, with some women praying and others crying loudly. The mineworkers were singing in the police trucks.

Police instructed the protesters to leave the court building and they assembled in the street outside, singing and dancing in front of police officers holding shields to barricade the court entrance.

Mark Munroe, executive vice president of Lonmin, said 30 percent of the 28,000 workforce reported for duty at the mine Monday, including fewer than half of the 3,000 rock drill operators, called RDOs, who were striking for higher wages amid a dispute pitting the country's oldest and biggest trade union against a startup.

A horde of politicians including 10 Cabinet ministers descended on the Marikana mine about 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Johannesburg on Monday. The ministers came to help bereaved families make burial arrangements and get counseling. A group of opposition politicians from several parties made the trip to investigate the scene of the killings that the South African Civil Society called "the horror of South Africa's first post-apartheid massacre."

President Jacob Zuma announced a week of national mourning starting Monday and urged the country to "reflect on the sanctity of human life" and "unite against violence from whatever quarter." Ten people, including police officers and mine workers, had died in violence at the mines in the days before the shootings.

He has instigated a judicial commission of inquiry into what happened on Thursday, when police say they acted in self-defense to fire a barrage of live bullets at a group of charging miners including one armed with a pistol and others with homemade spears and clubs.

National Police chief Riah Phiyega drew fire from opposition politicians for the defense of her officers, whom she absolved of all guilt in the shootings at a funeral Sunday for one of two police officers hacked to death by the strikers.

"It was the right thing to do," Phiyega said, though "We are sorry that lives were lost."

Lonmin said in a statement Monday: "Lonmin can confirm that work at its Marikana operations resumed today as significant numbers of employees returned to work." The company's shares have taken a hard hit since the strikes that started more than 10 days ago.

Lonmin had warned Sunday that Monday's "final ultimatum provides RDOs with a last opportunity to return to work or face possible dismissal."

However, the company issued a statement on Monday announcing "those illegal strikers who did not return to work this morning will not be dismissed and have been allowed an extra day in light of current circumstances."

Last year, Lonmin fired all 9,000 workers when a similar dispute over union representation stopped work at its nearby Karee mine, then asked them all to reapply and rehired all but a few considered responsible for the strike.

The Black Management Forum, a leadership organization promoting South African economic progress, issued a statement on Monday calling for an inquiry into the "issue of exploitative wages versus executive pay."

The organization said the investigation should include, among others, an inquiry into shareholders' attitudes toward mine safety.

A civil society organization, the Hola Bon Renaissance Foundation, warned on Monday that mining companies failing to settle issues internally could strengthen calls for the nationalization of natural resources.

Lonmin has lost 18.5 percent of its share value since the strike began Aug. 10. Since violence broke out shares have fallen by as much as 20 percent, at one time wiping some 390 million pounds ($610 million) off the company's market value.

Sudden Death in Athletes

News media occasionally present us with tragic cases of famous young athletes dying suddenly during sports activity. Theses cases commonly provoke discussions on how to prevent such dreadful incidents. Then, in a few days, everybody seems to have forgotten about it, until next time?

Sudden death in young athletes, associated with athletic activity, is a rare but well-known disorder. Most of these cases do not receive any media coverage. However, family and friends are left in deep shock. Many questions are left unanswered. How could this happen? Did we miss any warning signs? Could we have done something to prevent this from happening?

The majority of sudden cardiac death incidents in athletes are caused by disturbances in heart rhythm (ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation), leading to loss of blood circulation. Immediate treatment is aimed at restoring normal heart rhythm, usually by electric shocks given by so-called defibrillators.

The most common cause of disturbances in heart rhythm leading to sudden death in young athletes is underlying heart disease. Often, the disease is not diagnosed until after the event. As a result, there is great interest in detecting such disorders early, in order to be able to define appropriate treatment and activity restrictions for the individual.

The most common underlying cause of sudden death in young athletes is so-called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is a disorder which sometimes runs in families. However, in many cases there is no family history at all. In this disease, the muscle of the left ventricle of the heart becomes abnormally thick. Young people with this disorder commonly have no symptoms at all. There are a number of other underlying heart diseases that may lead to sudden death. Most of them are rare. Some may be temporary, such as viral infections of the heart muscle. Some may be congenital.

The only way to prevent sudden cardiac death in young athletes is to find the underlying heart disease before it leads to collapse and sudden death. This is a huge challenge, because some of these diseases are difficult to detect. The responsibility is within the medical community and among sports regulatory authorities. An important questions is whether regular screening of young athletes, by health professionals, can reduce the risk of sudden death.

There are two important questions we have to ask about screening for heart disease in young athletes. The first one involves how screening should be performed and what methods should be used. The second addresses what restrictions should be placed on athletes who turn out to have heart disease.

There are some data available on the impact of screening programs on the incidence of sudden deaths among athletes. A mandatory screening program for competitive athletes was launched in Italy in 1982. The annual incidence of sudden cardiac death in athletes decreased from 3.6/100.000 person ? years in 1979 ? 1980 to 0.4/100.000 person ? years in 2003 ? 2004. This implies an 89 percent reduction in 25 years. During the same period there was no change in the incidence of sudden cardiac death among non-athletes in the same age group.

Both the American Heart Association (AHA) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) have proposed guidelines for the screening of young athletes participating in competitive sports. The main difference between these guidelines is that the AHA relies on history and physical examination without further routine testing, while the ESC includes an ECG (electrocardiogram). Inclusion of an ECG is in accordance with the Italian experience. Individuals with abnormal findings in screening are referred for further testing. Such testing may involve echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart), ambulatory heart rhythm monitoring, exercise ? ECG or cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Although an ECG can sometimes be helpful in detecting heart disease it is commonly abnormal among healthy young athletes. This is one of the reasons why the AHA does not include an ECG in their guidelines. Furthermore, some heart diseases me not be detected by history, physical examination and ECG. Therefore some specialists have suggested that an an echocardiography should be included. This may sometimes be the only way to detect disorders like for example hypertrophic cardiomypathy.

In 2008 the UEFA (The Union of European Football Associations) put forward new rules concerning medical examination of players participating in European competition. Apart from history, physical examination and blood tests an ECG and an echocardiography should be performed.

In my opinion the inclusion of echocardiography, although not included in AHA and ESC guideline, would be an important step forward in athletes participating in high intensity competitive sports. My opinion is that echocardiography should be performed at regular intervals of 1-2 years in such athletes. This is a relatively simple and inexpensive procedure that gives a lot of information about the heart chambers, the heart muscle and the heart valves.

The second question is what restrictions should be placed upon athletes who on screening turn out to have signs of heart disease. The devastating impact of sudden death incidents justifies restriction of athletes from athletic competition if they have heart disease. The question is who should make the decision. In my opinion, informing the athlete about the increased risk and let himself decide whether to continue participating in competitive sports is hard to justify. However, it can be very hard for an athlete to accept being banned from competitive sports due to signs of heart disease. Although there may be increased risk for sudden death for that particular athlete, the absolute risk may indeed be very low. These are all difficult questions that have to be addressed. Although the answers may be difficult to deal with, these issues can not be left unsolved.

Obama slams Romney on taxes

President Barack Obama hounded Mitt Romney on Saturday, saying his wealthy rival would pay only one percent in taxes on his vast wealth under a plan authored by his running mate Paul Ryan.

Obama escalated his effort to use the pick of the conservative Republican congressman last week to drive votes away from Romney in swing states, including New Hampshire, where he was campaigning Saturday.

"The centerpiece of my opponent's entire economic plan is a new five-trillion-dollar tax cut, a lot of it going to the wealthiest Americans," Obama said.

"His new running mate, Congressman Ryan, he put forward a plan that would let governor Romney pay less than one percent in taxes each year, and here's the kicker -- he expects you to pick up the tab."

The president is demanding that Romney, a former venture capitalist, release more than the two years of personal tax returns he has already promised, and paints his rival as the epitome of a society tilted toward the rich.

On Thursday, Romney insisted that he had always paid at least 13 percent in taxes, but that figure could still be politically damaging as it is much lower than the rate paid by most middle class Americans.

Romney, estimated to be worth around $250 million, has his income taxed as investment earnings, rather than as an annual salary, hence the lower rate, complicating his campaign to deny Obama a second term on November 6.

In his budget proposal, Ryan would eliminate double taxation on interest, capital gains or dividends, reasoning that greater savings would lead to higher productivity and more investment.

Romney has however said he would keep taxes on capital gains, interests and dividends at the current rate, but eliminate them entirely for those earning less than $200,000 a year.

Obama cited a study by the bipartisan Tax Policy Center that said that Romney's policies would result in middle class families paying an extra $2,000 a year, while the wealthiest Americans would get a big tax cut.

But the Romney campaign said that after the release of new figures showing a rise in the unemployment rates in 44 states, it was not surprising the president was launching another attack.

"The fact is President Obama wants to raise taxes on private investment and job creators, which will lead to higher unemployment and fewer jobs," said Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams.

"The Romney-Ryan plan eliminates taxes for the middle class on interest, dividends and capital gains and implements pro-growth policies to deliver more jobs and more take-home pay for middle-class families."

Verizon's Locked Galaxy S3 Bootloader Unlocked - So, Why did Big Red Bother Again?

Once I sign the contract, it ceases to be Verizon's phone. The device is mine, and I'm legally entitled to do with it as I please. Hence the iPhone jailbreaking decision.

No the phone is still Verizon unless you outright purchased it. It 's your phone once the contact ends or you just buy it out. The contract that you signed with Verizon defines who owns the phone and what you can do with it.

Have you ever even read a contract that you sign for a mobile carrier? It states, nowhere in it, that they own the phone that you buy.

When you sign the contract, you are signing a service agreement. They are to provide you service, and they essentially give you a general list of limitations / general contract terms.

Why do people sign contracts? Purchasing a phone outright is very expensive. When you sign a contract, you are committing to pay X amount per month, for (usually) a 24-month term.

When you sign, you are also taking ownership of a phone for a subsidized price. This means that, in exchange for paying $199 for a phone (instead of $649) you are paying $199, and also promising you will be a customer for the terms established in your contract.

5th circuit ruling only applies to Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. There are 47 other states which it do not cover.

Re: Time to arrest the developer of the program.

VZW has presence in each of those states.

In any event, the DMCA reads "No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title"...

Circumventing DRM must result in a Title 17 violation to violate the DMCA. Adding apps to a phone or changing its behavior doesn't violate any part of Title 17. It's no different than defeating cell phone carrier locks.

Wrong. I see you either don't have a postpaid phone, or haven't read your contract. The ownership of the phone is transferred at the time you sign the agreement, which is why if it breaks outside the mfg warranty, you have to pay for the repair or replacement, not the carrier. Same if you lose it or physically damage it, you are on the hook.

If the carrier retained ownership, we would all be paying device lease fees like you do with most dsl/cable/satellite equipment. We pay a lease fee, the company owns the equipment, and is responsible for proper function of the device in case of equipment failure (not caused by physical damage) without regard to manufacturer warranty.

The phone becomes yours, but you agree to the prorated ETF if you break the contract prior to the end of the contract term. Hence why we don't have to return phones when we change service or end a contract early.

Yes and no. I didn't see DMCA exemption for jailbreak getting renewed this year. If that is still the case then technically what this developers are doing is illegal.

Just because something isn't specifically said to be legal doesn't mean it's illegal. The jailbreaking exemption expiring doesn't mean that jailbreaking is illegal. All it means is that the exemption, which specifically said that there could be no DMCA claims against jailbreaking, isn't there anymore.

By your logic, wearing a bright yellow shirt would be illegal unless there is a specific statute saying that wearing it is legal.

To make jailbreaking work you have to hack the phone software correct? If so the DMCA make hacking illegal.

The Copyright Office says that jailbreaking isn't a copyright violation. Jailbreaking is "fair use".

Old news, it have expired this year.

Re: Time to arrest the developer of the program.

said by skeechan:

New news...it has not expired YET. New rules aren't expected until October.

Not from all the articles I read. In February it was announced that it would expire at the end of the month. It was declared legal in February of 2010 and it's was for 2 years. Got anything that says it been extended?

Re: Time to arrest the developer of the program.

Copyright office website says rules are valid for 3 years and the rules about phone DRM were issued July 26, 2010. So technically they shouldn't expire until July 26, 2013. But new rules are expected in October which would supplant those made in 2010, thus nullifying them early if the copyright office were to reverse itself.

The way I read it, the "designations" are the classes of works referred to in the rules, e.g., the first section on DVDs, then the one on wireless handsets, etc.

Re: Time to arrest the developer of the program.

said by The Limit:

That's quite a slippery slope. Like what has been said already, the phone belongs to the user (not the company). The user can mod the phone as he/she sees fit (there was also a case regarding jailbreaking being legal/illegal, wasn't the end result that jailbreaking is legal?).

I don't get your position in the matter. Your argument doesn't make any sense to me.

There is never realy been a case about jail breaking being lega. There was rulling that DMCA do not cover it in 2010. That was only for 2 years and it expired this year. Yes there was case from 5th circuit but it only apply to the state that it covers. By jailbreaking the phone, you can put anything and everything and keep revenue out of cell phone company hands. To me that is a big no, no and phone company should fight back.

Are you trolling? Or do you really think developers that mod Verizon phones should be thrown in jail?

They are technically violating the law are they not? It's up to local prosecutor to decide the question of prosecution.

Jelly Bean release

"rumblings suggest Verizon will be pushing the Jelly Bean Android 4.1 update sometime later this month or early next"

You can pretty safely double or triple that timeframe based on the historic trends.

Well sure, because now they have to spend 3 months writing something into the new boot loader that will prevent the current software from rooting it. And it will take "developers" all of a month to crack that too.

more like, once they have the unlocked bootloader installed, you dont have to root it again, you can simply get updates from google directly, and then just download the verizon update and rip what you need from it as far as carrier specific stuff goes. If they do force an update of the bootloader(which I doubt), it probably wont take more than a week to crack it. Once its open, its open. For examples, look at the iOS hacking/jailbreaking. Once its initial jailbreak, it nearly always takes only a few days from the updates to jailbreak them again. Case in point, iOS 5.0.1 to 5.1. Apple didnt even bother to fix the flaw they used to jailbreak the software, they just patched some files and moved on.
