(AP) ? For years, Mark Dantonio and Ohio State were on fairly cozy terms.

Dantonio was a defensive coordinator there ? a protege of coach Jim Tressel ? before moving on and eventually taking over at Michigan State. He grew up an hour from the Buckeyes' home field, and his wife is an Ohio State graduate.

Times change, though. The Tressel era came to an unceremonious end. Urban Meyer is coaching the Buckeyes now, and for Dantonio, Ohio State is now simply a rival.

"It does make it easier," Dantonio said. "I know Urban, everything. Good guy, all that kind of stuff. It makes it easier when you don't have a real personal attachment because it's tough when you play against your good friends."

The 20th-ranked Spartans host the 14th-ranked Buckeyes on Saturday ? a tone-setting Big Ten opener if there ever was one. It will be Meyer's first conference game since taking over at Ohio State, and although the Buckeyes aren't eligible for the Big Ten title, there's a sense they could be the league's best team.

Michigan State, on the other hand, is still eyeing a Rose Bowl berth that narrowly eluded the Spartans the last two seasons. Dantonio's team made quite a statement at Ohio State last year, racking up nine sacks in a 10-7 win. Michigan State (3-1) brings back many of the same defensive standouts from that team, but the Buckeyes (4-0) hope they've improved.

"We made it through our preseason 4-0," Meyer said. "We have a lot of work to do to become a better football team in all three phases. We'd better do it fast because we're facing an excellent team in a tough environment."

Ohio State's unbeaten start included a win over California, while Michigan State knocked off Boise State in its opener. The Spartans also lost to Notre Dame and weren't sharp in a victory last weekend over Eastern Michigan.

Ohio State's defense is currently ranked last in the Big Ten, but quarterback Braxton Miller has already thrown for seven touchdowns and run for another seven.

With new quarterback Andrew Maxwell taking over and throwing to an inexperienced corps of receivers, Michigan State has leaned heavily on running back Le'Veon Bell, who already has 610 yards on 117 carries.

"Get him before he gets to you," Buckeyes safety Orhian Johnson said. "That's definitely the thing. You definitely want to get to him before he gets started because he's real top-heavy and you know he's going to run downfield. He's got good feet, so you can't just chop at him, but you have to make sure you get up there, you wrap him up and get your boys there for you."

It's hard to say what the outlook is among Michigan State players because they weren't available to the media this week. It's not unusual for the Spartans to close ranks before a big game, and this certainly qualifies.

"Has nothing to do with the press as much as it does with how we handle ourselves, our team, what we need to be dealing with and thinking about," Dantonio said. "I sometimes think that media talk and pressure sort of gets them thinking in different directions. I wanted to close our group and concentrate on us."

At least this time, Dantonio doesn't have to answer questions about facing his former boss. Now, Ohio State is just another strong program with an accomplished coach.

"The one who left two years ago won a national championship," Dantonio said, referring to Tressel. "It's just another great coach coming into our conference, doing his thing. I don't know what impact. It's a great conference. I just see it as another guy you've got to compete with recruiting on the field, tied together schematically, doing a great job, good recruiter. There's a lot of that going on in this league."

12 Tips To Building A Successful Startup Community Where You Live

aeriel-viewEditor?s Note: This is a guest post by Mark Suster (@msuster), a 2x entrepreneur, now VC at?GRP Partners. Read more about Suster at?Bothsidesofthetable In the first phase of the Internet - roughly from 1995-2005 it was difficult to build massive Internet-based companies outside of Silicon Valley. The big companies to be built and scaled were mostly infrastructure: databases, routers, browsers, spam filters, search engines and the like. Plus the obvious initial pioneers of the web like Yahoo!, eBay, Craigslist and so on. But the infrastructure is now in such a state the we're seeing the emergence of large tech businesses being built all across the United States including Gilt Groupe & Etsy in NYC, Living Social in DC, Groupon in Chicago, DemandMedia & Cornerstone OnDemand in LA. And many more. What does it take to build a successful entrepreneurial community? Can you build one locally? This post explores the 12 components of every successful startup city. EAST LANSING, Mich. When it comes to the birds of South Asia, Pamela Rasmussen wrote the book on it. Literally. Twice.

Rasmussen, Michigan State University assistant professor of zoology and assistant curator of mammalogy and ornithology at the MSU Museum, recently completed the second edition of the two-volume "Birds of South Asia: The Ripley Guide."

The second edition features the newest findings on classifications and vocalizations. It features several new species to the region, including newly discovered species. One new species, observed for the first time this year, is a Great Nicobar Crake photographed foraging on Great Nicobar Island.

The field guide also has short vocal descriptions as well as sonograms, which visually chart bird sounds, from screeches and trills to chirps and warbles. The new guide is being released as a paperback, which makes it easier to tote in the field. It can be found at www.lynxeds.com/product/birds-south-asia-0.

"The field guide volume has short voice descriptions for almost every species, so it is more user-friendly," Rasmussen said. "Several species new to South Asia and even two species new to science are now illustrated and featured in the new book."

Along with writing the authoritative book, Rasmussen also has pioneered work to document and catalog bird vocalizations from around the world.

At MSU, Rasmussen founded the Avian Vocalization Center, a database providing free downloads of bird sounds of more than 4,000 species around the world, including sonograms, photos and maps of their habitat.

The book was produced jointly by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, MSU Museum, MSU's Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, and Lynx Edicions, Barcelona.

advent released: In Home Care: Things To Consider | Adolescent ...

As a matter of fact, most elderly people wish to remain home when they age. In this case, they wish to maintain their possessions and routines. Since it is natural that old age leads to lack of ability, some people calls for in home care. What is in home care? It refers to a range of social and health services delivered at one?s home. When it comes to in home care, this service is usually needed at the time an old person wish to stay at home but still need ongoing care which cannot be handled by family members.

There is a misunderstanding concept when we talk about senior homecare. People often think of it as a means of sending senior away to a range of facility. Some people do not want to be busy by taking care of seniors on their own, and this is why they call for in home care service to replace their task. This way is certainly a wrong concept since the nature of home care must be based on dignity. That means you still provide senior with great care and get it done when you have to work to make ends meet.

When it comes to senior homecare or companion care, it is important to still give your attention to the senior living in your home. Just in case the senior is your parent, you should do your own task as a child. In order that you can get reliable home care service for senior, you without a doubt need to consider some important aspects. First, it is necessary to determine your needs by which you can prioritize what you need help most. The next thing to consider is to ask the senior on what type of home care serve he/she want to have.

Age-Based Retirement Saving Guidelines - Budgeting and Personal ...

How Much Should I Put Aside for Retirement?

Are you unsure of whether or not you're saving enough for retirement? Well, I've got good news: Fidelity Investments just released age-related retirement saving guidelines.

According to the group, you should have your annual salary saved by the time you're 35. By age 45, you should have three times your annual salary saved.

By 55, you should have five times your annual salary in a retirement portfolio. And by the time you turn 65, you should have eight times your salary ready for your retirement.

Does this sound like a tall order? Read more about it in my latest article, Retirement Savings by the Decade.

Learning requires rhythmical activity of neurons

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The hippocampus represents an important brain structure for learning. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich discovered how it filters electrical neuronal signals through an input and output control, thus regulating learning and memory processes.

Accordingly, effective signal transmission needs so-called theta-frequency impulses of the cerebral cortex. With a frequency of three to eight hertz, these impulses generate waves of electrical activity that propagate through the hippocampus. Impulses of a different frequency evoke no transmission, or only a much weaker one. Moreover, signal transmission in other areas of the brain through long-term potentiation (LTP), which is essential for learning, occurs only when the activity waves take place for a certain while. The scientists even have an explanation for why we are mentally more productive after drinking a cup of coffee or in an acute stress situation: in their experiments, caffeine and the stress hormone corticosterone boosted the activity flow.

When we learn and recall something, we have to concentrate on the relevant information and experience it again and again. Electrophysiological experiments in mice now show why this is the case. Scientists belonging to Matthias Eder?s Research Group measured the transmission of electrical impulses between neurons in the mouse hippocampus. Under the fluorescence microscope, they were able to observe in real time how the neurons forward signals.

Jens Stepan, a junior scientist at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, stimulated the input region of the hippocampus the first time that specifically theta-frequency stimulations produce an effective impulse transmission across the hippocampal CA3/CA1 region. This finding is very important, as it is known from previous studies that theta-rhythmical neuronal activity in the entorhinal cortex always occurs when new information is taken up in a focused manner. With this finding, the researchers demonstrate that the hippocampus highly selectively reacts to the entorhinal signals. Obviously, it can distinguish important and, thus, potentially recollection-worth information from unimportant one and process it in a physiologically specific manner.

One possible reaction is the formation of the so-called long-term potentiation (LTP) of signal transmission at CA3-CA1 synapses, which is often essential for learning and memory. The present study documents that this CA1-LTP occurs only when the activity waves through the hippocampus take place for a certain time. Translating this to our learning behavior, to commit for instance an image to memory, we should intently view it for a while, as only then we produce the activity waves described long enough to store the image in our brain.

With this study, Matthias Eder and colleagues succeeded in closing a knowledge gap. "Our investigation on neuronal communication via the hippocampal trisynaptic circuit provides us with a new understanding of learning in the living organism. We are the first to show that long-term potentiation depends on the frequency and persistency of incoming sensory signals in the hippocampus," says Matthias Eder.

Recipe :: Vanilla Bean Coconut Cupcakes with Coconut Frosting ...

Sep 26, 2012 by Chelsea

I just wanted to post this recipe really quick before I forget to do so.

I made these cupcakes for an autumn BBQ on Sunday, because I know my small friend Calliope (daughter of the hosts) is sweet on coconut.? There are lots of vegan coconut cupcake recipes out there, because if you use coconut oil and/or coconut milk, you don?t need any animal products.? My recipe is mostly vegan except for one egg; I just don?t really trust baked goods that don?t have at least one egg holding everything together.

To my delight, I found that there are several special features that make the frosting on these cupcakes ideal for a party or gathering.

First, if you make the frosting with coconut oil instead of butter (which I recommend), the icing will stay pretty for a long time when left out; coconut oil is solid at room temperature and it won?t go melting.? Secondly, even though there are those who swear it?s a dish-ruiner, coconut doesn?t really have a very strong taste of its own.? That makes it an ideal flavor to combine with others for fun experiments.? I added a few drops of rosewater (and pink organic food coloring) to my frosting below, because I am positively septuagenarian when it comes to how deeply I love floral food.? You could also add in a few drops of almond extract (and use almond milk instead of coconut milk), orange extract, strawberry extract, etc, to kick the frosting up a notch.? You could even add a little dusting of cocoa powder.? Anything that would pair well with coconut is fair game.

Note: This recipe only makes about 15 or 16 regular-sized cupcakes.? Double it if you want more, or make a bunch of mini ones.

And these cupcakes did pass muster, if you?re wondering.? They are Calliope-approved.

?

Vanilla Bean Coconut Cupcakes with Coconut Frosting

?

INGREDIENTS

Cupcakes

  • 1 cup raw sugar
  • 1 ? cups flour
  • 1/3 cup shortening (mixed into the flour, not melted)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ?? teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg

Frosting

  • 1 cup unrefined coconut oil (should be solid at room temperature)
    • OR 2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • dash of salt
  • 1 ? ?teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 to 5 tablespoons coconut milk or almond milk
  • 2 cups shredded coconut for garnish (optional: toasted)
  • 2-3 drops of any additional flavorings you might like to try? (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Cupcakes

  • Preheat oven to 350? and line or grease cupcake tray.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.? Add in the shortening by hand.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together coconut milk, vanilla, and egg.
  • Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and whisk until just combined.? Do not overmix.
  • Fill cupcake tins two-thirds full with batter.? Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake come out clean.
  • Remove cupcakes from the oven and cool completely before frosting.

Frosting

  • Beat the coconut oil until mostly smooth with a handheld or stand mixer.? It?s okay if there are a few small lumps of coconut left in there.
  • With the mixer running on low, add in powdered sugar, vanilla, salt, and 1 tbsp coconut or almond milk as needed until the frosting reaches a spreadable consistency.? Don?t worry if you don?t use all the milk ? it might not be necessary.? I only needed two.? Check after each tbsp to see where you are, consistency-wise.
  • Add in a few drops of any optional flavorings ? almond extract, rosewater, orange extract, etc.
  • Beat on high for 2 more minutes until the frosting becomes light and fluffy.

Toasting the Coconut

(best to do right after the cupcakes come out of the oven)

  • Turn the oven down to 300?.
  • Spread a thin layer of coconut flakes in a baking dish (do not grease).
  • Put the baking dish in the oven for 20 or so minutes, being sure to stir the coconut once to twice during that time.? Remove when the majority of the coconut is toasted a light golden brown.? Be sure to keep an eye on this ? coconut burns easily.

Lab encodes collagen: Program defines stable sequences for synthesis, could help fight disease, design drugs

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? The human body is proficient at making collagen. And human laboratories are getting better at it all the time.

In a development that could lead to better drug design and new treatments for disease, Rice University researchers have made a major step toward synthesizing custom collagen. Rice scientists who have learned how to make collagen -- the fibrous protein that binds cells together into organs and tissues -- are now digging into its molecular structure to see how it forms and interacts with biological systems.

Jeffrey Hartgerink, an associate professor of chemistry and of bioengineering, and his former graduate student Jorge Fallas, now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington, wrote a new computer program that predicts the most stable structures of nanometer-sized collagen. In nature, these small structures link into chains that serve as connective tissue in the body. Hartgerink and Fallas followed up the computer research by making and testing the collagen detailed in their calculations.

Their success, reported September 25 in the online journal Nature Communications, will be of interest to physicians and scientists who work in reconstructive surgery, cosmetics and tissue engineering as well as to researchers investigating collagen protein interactions that could lead to new treatments for cancer and other diseases.

"Collagen is an odd protein. On one hand, it's the most abundant protein in the human body," said Hartgerink, who in a previous work unveiled a new way to synthesize self-assembling collagen. "It basically is the connective fiber that holds cells together; without it you'd turn into a big puddle.

"By mass, collagen is the most common protein there is. But it's different from almost any other you might look at," he said.

Hartgerink likened collagen to DNA with a structural twist, as it has not two but three intertwining peptide strands. "Watson and Crick, when they were first trying to understand DNA, figured out the underlying code for how all the base pairs fit together," he said. "Collagen is similar, except there are three strands. In this paper, we've started to crack the code of which amino acids go with what others to stabilize the structure."

While scientists have made a great deal of progress defining the structures of other proteins, "only a small group of us have been interested in collagen. And because of that, our understanding of it has lagged behind," he said.

In their new work, Hartgerink and Fallas analyzed charged interactions between amino acids that attract one strand to another (and in this case, yet another) to form the triple helix. "We look at positively charged and negatively charged amino acids and where they need to be aligned to result in stabilization," Hartgerink said.

In the same way three-color images must be properly aligned for a viewer to see a complete picture, the three strands of a collagen protein must be in register for the protein to carry out its function.

"Collagen does more than hold cells together," he said. "It also binds other proteins that have interesting functions. Those proteins will attach to collagen, and then cells come along and bind to those proteins. Based on that interaction, a cell will then 'decide' how to behave or differentiate into a different type of cell."

Hartgerink said that property makes collagen especially valuable for biological scaffolds, materials that are under intense study as a way to grow new body parts -- even entire organs -- to replace damaged ones.

Hartgerink said strand alignment also determines a collagen helix's stability. The computer program designed by Fallas and Hartgerink calculates the stability of each possible alignment of a given set of peptide strands -- 27 in all -- to find the best matches of positively and negatively charged amino acids. It then assigns each set a score, based on the net positive or negative charge of the entire helix.

"If we have a positive charge in a peptide sequence, it will destabilize the triple helix, and we score that as a minus 1," he said. "If we have a negative charge, that also destabilizes the helix and we also score that as a minus 1. But if those charges line up in what we call the axial geometry, it negates the destabilization. This triple helix would have a score of 0, which is good.

"We create huge, theoretical populations of collagen sequences and score all of them," he said. "We find out which are closest to this magical score of 0 and throw out all the other ones." That tells the researchers which sequences are likely to self-assemble into the most stable helixes. "The math looks complicated, but a personal computer can generate one of these sequences in one or two minutes of processing time. It's not super sophisticated." He said the code will be available on his group's home page for other researchers to try.

Hartgerink's lab, based at Rice's BioScience Research Collaborative, has the unusual capacity to carry out both theoretical and experimental sides of the work. While the program generates test sequences in minutes on a desktop computer, synthesis and analysis of actual collagen takes much more effort.

"Once you have a sequence, you want to test it to see if it actually works," he said. "The math is useless if it's not predicting reality. Our proof-of-principle showed the computer code can be used to design a triple helix that folds properly. Now that we know how to do this, we can think about making collagen biomaterials for things like scaffolding, or to test protein/collagen receptor interactions, which people have been trying to demonstrate for a long time."

>He said the new work could help researchers decipher collagen's role in the metastasis of cancer. "Cancer cells need to be able to degrade collagen in order to move from organ to organ. We need to understand the structure of collagen to learn how they do that," Hargerink said. "Blood clots happen because specific proteins recognize a collagen sequence. If we don't understand the structure, we can't assist clotting to heal a wound or help people who have overclotting problems.

"All these targets are critical but they're very difficult to approach when we don't fundamentally understand collagen structure," he said. "We're not solving all those problems here, but this is a good first step."

The work was supported by the National Science Foundation, the Robert A. Welch Foundation and the Norman Hackerman Advanced Research Program of Texas.

Orioles win, remain 1 game behind Yanks

By HOWARD ULMAN

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:25 p.m. ET Sept. 21, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - Matt Wieters drove in three runs, Miguel Gonzalez pitched 6 1-3 solid innings and the Baltimore Orioles remained one game behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East with a 4-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

The Yankees beat Oakland 2-1 in 10 innings. The Orioles broke a tie with the Athletics for the top wild-card spot. All three teams have 12 games remaining.

Jon Lester (9-13) lost for the first time in his 21 career starts against the Orioles. He had been 14-0, the longest winning streak against the Orioles franchise for a pitcher at the start of his career since at least 1901. It had been the longest current winning streak by an active pitcher against any team. But he's 0-1 in his last four starts against them, all Orioles victories.

Gonzalez (7-4) allowed two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk as the Orioles improved to 6-1 this season at Fenway Park. They lead the AL with 44 wins on the road.

Jim Johnson pitched the ninth for his club-record 46th save, one more than the previous record Randy Myers set in 1997.

The score was tied 2-2 after five innings before the Orioles went ahead with two runs in the sixth.

Adam Jones walked with one out and scored on a double by Wieters. A wild pitch by Lester sent Wieters to third and Mark Reynolds drove him in with a single. Reynolds went 2 for 4 and is 15 for 34 in 10 games against Boston this year.

Baltimore second baseman Robert Andino left the game in the ninth after being hit in the left ear flap by a fastball from Mark Melancon.

The Red Sox had taken a 1-0 lead in the third on doubles by Daniel Nava and Pedro Ciriaco. Then Wieters got his first big hit of the night in the fourth with a two-run single with no outs. It drove in J.J. Hardy, who had singled, and Jones, who had doubled.

Boston tied it in the fifth when Gonzalez retired the first two batters then allowed consecutive singles by Ciriaco, Scott Podsednik and Dustin Pedroia, who snapped an 0 for 18 slump.

The game was the start of the Red Sox's final homestand of their first losing season since 1997. But they could have an impact on the postseason race with two home games each against Baltimore and Tampa Bay before they finish with three games at Baltimore and three at New York.

NOTES: The Orioles activated DH Jim Thome and LHP Troy Patton from the 15-day disabled list. ... The Red Sox recalled 3B Danny Valencia and RHPs Pedro Beato and Zach Stewart from Triple-A Pawtucket. ... Former pro wrestler George "The Animal" Steele, who wrestled at Fenway Park on June 28, 1969, threw out one of the ceremonial first pitches. Known for biting the turnbuckle when he wrestled, he appeared to bite the ball before throwing. The other ceremonial pitch was thrown by Jim Roosevelt Jr., grandson of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who gave his final campaign speech at Fenway on Nov. 4, 1944. ... Randy Wolf (2-0) is scheduled to pitch for the Orioles against Aaron Cook (4-10) on Saturday in the second game of the three-game series.

Dark Side of Parenting Part III: Finding Hope - Just.Be.Enough.

We are continuing the story of our brave guest poster with part III of the Dark Side of Parenting a Teenager in Trouble. If you missed part I or II, you will want to read those first.

Dark side of Parenting a Teenager | Just.Be.Enough.
Here we are. Wringing imaginary things through fingers as insurance questions are doled out from the monotone voice behind the desk. We are brought through sliding doors and sterile hallways to a bed hidden behind a curtain. We are greeted with a kind smile from the nurse taking vitals. Her questions to the patient in the bed go unanswered.

Then, as if our hearts are not crushed enough, the voice from the bed says five words that sting with every syllable.

?I don?t want them here.?

We stand to step past the fabric that has shielded us from outside machine beeps, moans and whispers. The curtain is drawn past us and the Q & A resumes. We are once again deemed outsiders.

The nurse emerges and extends a hand in the direction of a room off to the side. We enter and assume the position of a huddle. We are about to hear the play-by-play of what happened and what will happen next.

We learn that the cocktail consumed was whatever our child could get their hands on. A natural sleep aid ??over the counter, found in the vitamin section,?that we purchased at our doctor?s recommendation a year ago to help our child with insomnia ??allergy medicine and Advil, all washed down with Robitussin. All non-threatening alone, but when combined together in mass quantities, well, leads to a room such as this. We don?t have anything else in the house and I?m thankful.

The nurse also shares that the cuts have been treated and should heal well. When asked where the cuts could possibly be as we have seen nothing, we are told they?re on the hips. Cutters are masters at hiding wounds and this is why we never saw anything while on vacation, even with bathing suits, tanks tops and all.

We are allowed back to be with our child and we sit in semi-silence for hours of observation to make sure the heart has not been damaged. I take the opportunity to go home to grab a few sweatshirts and to have one of the hardest conversations I?ve ever had to have ? explaining to our youngest what was happening. Trying to comfort and respond to questions I had no answers to.

I returned to the hospital, now with the added guilt of leaving the youngest behind to sit alone with their thoughts. I felt it was almost a catch-22. Where was I needed most? It was a very odd place to be in my head.

The medical clearance is the pass to have us brought through secure glass doors and a swipe-access-only entrance door. We sit a long time until the night-shift psychiatric nurse greets us in the waiting room. She explains that she will first talk to our child alone, return to talk to us and then we will all talk together.

She returns an hour later to advise us our child is extremely depressed and has been for a long time. This is foreign to us. Our child, we thought, IS happy, interacting with family, involved in school and activities. They did have a fall-out with friends, which we all agreed is sometimes something that just happens. We thought this was normal teenage angst?a phase that we all go through.

We discuss our feelings regarding these events and then are given options. We can have our child stay here to wait for a bed on the ward, but that may not be for a few days and we are told it could be pretty scary. We are lucky to be here on a ?quiet? night. The second option is to transfer to a rehabilitation facility for group therapy. We all agree that our child would not benefit from this, in fact would be set back due to their personality of ?helper.? The fear was that as the group, who in most cases would have really dire issues, would share and our child would take it all in and try to help the others vs. helping themselves. The last option was to bring them home and follow up with intense therapy. All of these options would be presented to the head psychiatrist to sign-off on the chosen course of action. We still may not have a choice in the matter and that was terrifying.

We may have not been aware that our child was depressed, but we felt pretty confident that we did still know our child and, for our situation, option three was the best. We joined in a room together and tried to talk. The nurse had to prompt a majority of the conversation. When she felt satisfied that enough interaction was occurring, she left us to be alone. I don?t remember all that was said. I know that we shared a laugh or two based on the drunken antics of the woman in the hallway who was trying to find food and convince the other nurse to let her leave.

The nurse opened the door to find all of us asleep. A makeshift, exhausted family chain ? my husband in the chair to my right holding my hand, me in a chair with my arm and head bent over the exam table, my other hand reaching, laced into my baby?s fingers and theirs into mine.

We had the discharge papers and could go home. She hugged all of us and said she wished all family units could be this way. We would be okay.

That was the hope we needed to have enough courage to face the rocky road ahead.

??

Stay tuned for the last part of this highly emotional and brave story.

Panda Internet Security 2013

At a time when so many security suite vendors opt for a soothing pastel design, the bold, colorful appearance of Panda Internet Security 2013 makes for a refreshing change. Like the company's standalone antivirus, this suite stands out visually from the competition. And, like Panda's antivirus, performance-wise its suite is mostly just average.

The main window's top panel reports the suite's overall security status along with details on how many items have been scanned and how many threats detected; clicking the stats area brings up a much more detailed window of detection statistics.

The top row of colorful buttons relate to tasks like launching scans, viewing reports, or connecting with Panda's services online. Buttons on the lower row represent security components; each has its own "ON" flag to let you know protection is active. Clicking any of these takes you to detailed settings. Even the status bar at the window's bottom is loaded with social media buttons and buttons to access advanced features. This is one packed window!

Same Antivirus Protection
With one exception, the suite's antivirus protection is the same as what's found in Panda Antivirus Pro 2013 . Do read that review for full details. I'll simply summarize here.

Installing Panda for malware cleanup testing went smoothly, for the most part. Tech support agents handled one problem by supplying an offline installer. Fixing the other system where Panda wouldn't install took more effort, including a hands-on remote-control session, but they got the job done.

Panda detected 82 percent of the threats and scored 5.9 points for cleanup. That's pretty good, but quite a few products scored a full half-point higher, or more. Norton AntiVirus (2013) topped the chart with 6.6 points. Kaspersky Internet Security (2013) and AVG Internet Security 2013 came close with 6.5 points, as did Daily Safety Check Home Edition .

Quite a few products detected 100 percent of the threats using rootkit technology; Panda managed 80 percent. Kaspersky scored 9.4 points for rootkit removal, better than the rest. For full details on my malware cleanup testing procedures, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Related Story

In my malware blocking test, Panda managed to keep all the rootkit samples from installing, but its overall score was lower than most. It detected 82 percent of the threats and earned 8.1 points. Daily Safety Check and SecureIT Plus detected 97 percent and scored 9.4 and 9.7 points respectively. Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete earned a perfect 10 of 10 points when tested against my earlier malware collection. The article How We Test Malware Blocking explains how I come up with these scores.

Related Story

In my malware protection tests Panda earned scores that are good, but not great. Panda's technology did a little better in tests by independent labs. In particular, it rated ADVANCED or better in all tests by AV-Comparatives and achieved certification by AV-Test with a decent score. The chart below summarizes recent lab results. For more about the labs, see How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests.
