Friends with benefits: you may have been into one or thinking of getting into one. Having a sugardaddy single for a friend is great but what is the deal with that if you can have a ?friends with benefits? relationship? You can get to party together, sleep together and have fun together with no strings attached. You are not into commitment and you are not emotionally in a relationship with each other. It may sound perfect but is it the best for you?
The Good
One of the perks in this kind of relationship is the convenience. There is no emotional baggage, therefore neither of you expect anything. On the other hand, even if there is no attachment you still need to apply your basic manners, such as, don?t openly jump at all the last minute calls. Give your partner some notice at least when you want to see them or want some company. You can at least give them some appreciation and show some anticipation to heighten up your moods. This way you both can have a better experience.
You are also more relaxed and comfortable to be with someone you already know. You can achieve a higher level of intimacy faster as compared from being complete strangers at first. Having someone already close to you, you won?t have all those issues such as being overly conscious about yourself.
The Bad
For all the good things, there are downsides. One of the downside of having this kind of relationship is that one of you might get too attached. You might find yourself risking your relationship now to get to a whole new level while the other one won?t. Men and women connect on a different level. The more time you get to spend being physical, then feelings might likely develop. With this attachment, you can develop feelings which can shake your relationship. Then this can lead to anger, resentment and even the feelings of being used and depression when rejected.
You started out as friends but you may end up as being complete strangers when your relationship ends. That?s another risk with this kind of relationship. You have to be careful in drawing the line between intimacy and friendship. Once you start crossing the borders to physical intimacy, you may start to change the old dynamics of your friendship.
Also, this kind of relationship might become an issue for your future relationships. When you start dating someone new and they discover that you?ve become intimate with a friend, it can cause some problems. When you still see your ?friend? on a regular basis, your new partner may become too wary of your friendship and even jealous. Remember that you belong with your partner now, and what you have with your ?friend? is of the past.
Before you venture into this relationship, bear in mind that there are risks with your decisions. You may gain a new lover or lose an old friend. You must learn to handle yourself and this kind of relationship so that it may not get in the way of your future commitments.
With UK Sugardaddys, you can find relationships for a much mature and serious level, for flings or even just for friendship. You can choose the kind of relationship you want with these Sugardaddys. Find out more about them at => http://www.UKSugarDaddys.com
Welcome to the 1 percent, hypothetical lottery winner.? Here?s what you can buy with your winnings.
The Mega Millions lottery jackpot hit a record $540 million Thursday and by Friday it had climbed to $640 million with a lump sum option of $462 million.
If you're lucky enough to beat the 1-in-176 million odds and win, the bad news is you won?t be able to take home that full amount. That's because lottery officials will withhold 25 percent for federal gaming taxes, according to Arlen Harris of the Washington's?Lottery, which participates in the Mega Millions.
Still, you should be pretty well set for life.
While you still might be on the hook for state taxes, you would have the kind of money to afford multiple homes, travel by private jet and take up a fancy hobby like collecting fine wine or antique cars, said Bruce Wallin, editorial director of the luxury goods magazine Robb Report.
"That kind of money affords the ability to pursue your passions to the kind of extreme that a lot of us dream of," he said.
You could even follow in the underwater path of Hollywood director James Cameron and spend a few million on a personal submarine, one of the latest trends among the superrich.
Still, Wallin cautions that you might want to try before you buy. For example, a 220-foot luxury yacht, complete with a crew and all the toys you can imagine can be rented for about $300,000 a week. That's well within your new budget and a good way to test the waters, literally, before spending $10 million or $20 million on your own yacht.
If you are ready to buy, here are some items to consider for your shopping list.
Your own island
Windermere
Allan Island in Washington state
What?s the first thing that?s going to happen after you win the lottery? Inevitably, that guy who was a jerk to you in high school or that relative who?s been ridiculing you for years is going to find you on Facebook and start hitting you up for money.
Time to get away. Far away.
Private islands range in price from under $50,000 to $160 million. For just a small fraction of your winnings, you can be the owner of 292-acre Allan Island in Washington state, listed for $13.5 million.
Still, the upkeep alone can be daunting. Wallin recommends renting an island before you buy.
"One of the things you'd want to do in winning the lottery is take a great trip," he said.
Your own ranch?
Bill Mcdavid / Hall and Hall
Maybe you get seasick easily or you fancy yourself more of a rugged Western type. Don?t despair, you can still find plenty of privacy on the mainland.
With?less than?one-tenth of your winnings -- or $29.5 million -- you could be the owner of Mill Creek Ranch, a nearly 26,000-acre ranch in Red Bluff, Calif., with a 7,388-square-foot Spanish Colonial home.
Of course, you?ll have to budget about $48,623 a year in taxes. For perspective, that?s a little less than the median annual household income in this country.
A jet
Mike Wintroath / AP
A Hawker 4000 jet airplane
The good news about the Red Bluff property ? it?s just a few miles from a jet-capable airport.
Here?s where you might want to take some advice from the other 1 percenters. Warren Buffett?s Berkshire Hathaway owns NetJets, which provides fractional ownership of jets and saves you the hassle of having to buy a whole jet all on your own.
The Marquis Jet Card gets you 25 hours of flight time for a mere $119,000 a year.
If you take the lottery's annual payment option, that would represent just a few days' worth of your yearly payout.
Your dream car
Porsche
Before you won the lottery, maybe your idea of a dream car was just something that didn?t leak too much oil and was less likely to break down on the freeway during the heavy commute hours.
Now, you can afford to have a lot more fun on the road.
The Porsche 918 Spyder may be a good option, if you can wait a while.
Porsche only plans to make 918 of these, so it will set you back $845,000. But on the bright side you?ll be saving money on gas. The plug-in gas-electric hybrid, due out in November 2013, has V8 engine that generates 500 horsepower plus two electric motors that help it get an estimated 78 miles per gallon.
A great party
Frontiers Elegant Journeys
Orient Express Royal Scotsman
Look, you?ve just won the lottery: Beer and chips at your place is just not going to do.
When it comes to luxury party planning, the options are endless. If you want to keep the gathering intimate, and keep the paparazzi and unwanted guests out of your hair, it?s best to keep moving.
The Royal Scotsman will take you and up to 36 of your closest friends on a four-day excursion through the Scottish Highlands. Yes, you?ll be traveling on your own private train. The ?rolling house party? starts at just $166,800, or less than 1 percent of those annual payments.
A sports team, or a few companies
The Mega Millions lottery hit $540 million on Thursday, reports CNBC's Darren Rovell.
?
If you do win the lottery, the most common bad joke/piece of advice you're likely to hear is, "Don't spend it all in one place." (Wow, is that going to get old.)
But if you do want to go big, CNBC notes that your winnings are enough to buy the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League or a medium-sized company like Rosetta Stone or Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have a significantly greater prevalence of early adverse life events , including general trauma as well as physical, emotional and sexual abuse, according to a new study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association.
"Various types of early adverse events are associated with the development of irritable bowel syndrome, particularly among women," said Lin Chang, MD, of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles and lead author of this study. "Addressing early adverse events and associated psychological symptoms in these patients is important and may help guide management approaches that reduce symptoms and improve overall well-being."
Although associations between an abuse history and IBS have been reported before, in the current study, researchers aimed to assess simultaneously the association of a range of traumatic events ? not limited to abuse ? with IBS and the impact of differences in gender and psychological factors on these associations. Men and women with IBS who were 18 years of age and older were recruited primarily from community advertisements in the greater Los Angeles area. Early adverse life events were evaluated in 294 IBS patients (79 percent were women) and 435 controls (77 percent were women). Validated questionnaires assessed gastrointestinal, psychological and somatic symptoms.
Compared with controls, IBS patients reported a higher prevalence of general trauma, physical punishment, emotional abuse and sexual events. These events included witnessing violence, mental illness in the family, emotional abuse, and being forced to touch intimate parts of a person's body or have genital sex. These significant differences were observed mainly in women. Emotional abuse was the strongest predictor of IBS. Further, the strength of the relationship between the early trauma and IBS was reduced after controlling for the presence of psychological and other non-gastrointestinal symptoms.
Early adverse life events refer to traumatic experiences during childhood encompassing physical, sexual or emotional abuse, as well as discordant relationships with a primary caretaker, or the loss of a parent. These events appear to be associated with an increased vulnerability toward developing functional gastrointestinal disorders, including IBS.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The number of people seeking U.S. unemployment benefits dropped last week to the lowest level in four years, adding to evidence that the job market is strengthening.
Applications for weekly unemployment benefits fell by 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 359,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the fewest applicants since April 2008. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, declined to 365,000 ? the fewest for that measure since May 2008.
When unemployment benefit applications drop consistently below 375,000, it usually signals that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate. The decline has coincided with the best three months of hiring in two years.
The department made annual revisions to the past five years of data, which increased the number of applications in recent months and showed a slower decline. Still, even after the revisions, applications have fallen roughly 12 percent over the past six months.
Most economists still expect another strong month of hiring in March.
"The trend remains unambiguously downwards," said Ian Shepherdson, an economist at High Frequency Economics. "We think the rate of decline ... is slowing ... but they are still consistent with robust, sustained payroll gains."
Separately, the U.S. economy expanded at a solid pace in the final three months of last year, but growth is expected to slow in the current quarter.
The economy grew at annual rate of 3 percent in the fourth quarter, the Commerce Department said. But economists forecast it likely dipped below 2 percent in the current quarter.
Businesses have been restocking their shelves at a slower pace and shipping fewer long-lasting manufactured goods. In addition, Europe's debt crisis and slower growth in Asia have reduced demand for U.S. exports.
Stronger hiring in the first two months of the year probably hasn't offset those weaknesses. That's because Americans' pay has barely kept pace with inflation while gas prices have spiked. So consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity, probably hasn't increased much from the end of last year.
Most economists expect growth to pick up later this year, as more hiring lifts the economy.
From December through February, employers added an average of 245,000 jobs per month. That has pushed down the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years.
Companies are hiring more workers because the economy is picking up. The economy grew at an annual rate of 3 percent in the final three months of last year. That was better than the 1.8 percent rate in the previous quarter.
The number of people receiving unemployment benefits also fell. More than 7.1 million laid-off workers received unemployment aid in the week ended March 10, the latest data available. That's about 130,000 lower than the previous week.
There are other signs the economy is steadily recovering. Consumers remained confident in March, even as gas prices jumped.
And the battered housing market is showing small signs of improvement. January and February comprised the best winter for sales of previously occupied homes in five years, according to the National Association of Realtors.
One concern is that rising gas prices will force consumers to cut back on discretionary spending. That could weigh on economic growth and slow hiring. The Federal Reserve says it expects oil and gas prices to temporarily boost inflation but predicts that longer-term inflation should remain stable.
The job market still has a ways to go to fully recover from the Great Recession. More than 12.8 million people remain unemployed and the economy still has 5 million fewer jobs than before the downturn.
But the more robust job market has caused some so-called "discouraged workers" to start looking again. The work force rose by nearly a half-million in February.
MIRANSHAH, Pakistan?? A U.S. drone strike killed four suspected militants and wounded three others on Friday in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region near the Afghanistan border, intelligence officials and militants said.
The remotely piloted aircraft targeted a residential compound used by foreign militants in Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, a Pakistan Taliban commander told Reuters.
"All of those killed and injured in this attack were Arab, they belonged to some Arab country," the commander said.
Intelligence officials, however, said they did not have details on the identities or nationalities of the suspected militants.
The controversial drone program, a key element in U.S. counter-terrorism efforts, is highly unpopular in Pakistan, where it is considered a violation of sovereignty with many civilian casualties.
The United States says the strikes in Pakistan's unruly northwestern tribal regions along Afghanistan border are very accurate and there is minimal collateral damage.
Several militant groups have strongholds in the area, and often take advantage of the porous frontier to launch cross-border attacks on NATO and Afghan forces.
A Pakistani parliamentary committee recently demanded an end to drone strikes on Pakistani territory as part of its recommendations for a new direction of ties with Washington.

Social media marketing offers one of the only platforms where you can stand to learn from those around you in an extremely interactive sense. Where other plans would result in your company failing if they failed, SMM is inexpensive and any mistakes are fixable. Your audience will often supply feedback for any media, and you can learn how to approach them better next time. In combination with the information in this article, you can begin pulling traffic in no time.
You should change your profile pictures regularly. Make sure you have the same one on different social networks to appear consistent. You could have a different logo to reflect holidays, or use a picture of your latest product. Make sure your readers are always able to identify your brand easily.
Learn the posting patterns on social sites. The peak traffic times for many of these sites are at 7 A.M., 5 P.M. and 10 P.M. and those are the times that you should be sure to post something new. If you post more than those three times, be sure that you are posting something unique and interesting, but limit the total number of times you post each day.
When your customers want to contact you on your social media, always respond in a timely manner. Do not let messages sit for days unread. Your customers and followers are taking the time to write, so from a customer service perspective. It is good customer service to respond to messages and comments at least on a daily basis
Never dismiss advice just because it is coming from a competitor in your niche. People that have been involved long enough to establish their company aren?t often worried about their glory being stolen. If someone has useful and relevant experience, always lend a listening ear. In the end, this could help you and your company become better as a whole.
Social Media Marketing
If you are going into the social media marketing, you have to be able to deal with the negativity that can be associated with it. It is great when your followers love your products and company, but you have to deal with the negative side also. Do not turn your back on it but face it head on and help those customers who are unhappy.
To make your social media marketing campaign successfully market your brand, sell yourself as an industry authority. Instead of plugging your products, produce engaging content that entertains, educates and even inspires people. If you happen to create something that goes just a little viral due to the share button, your company name is getting out there.
Social Media Marketing Strategy
Before developing a specific social media marketing strategy, figure out which social networking site you want to use. Each social networking site works differently, so it is important that your strategy will work with the site you pick. For instance, on Facebook you can create a poll, unlike most sites.
You really have to remember to respond to comments and reviews as fast, and as professionally, as you can. This can make your or break you in social media marketing. You will want to pay special attention to negative postings from readers and respond to them right away. If you simply delete these posts, your reputation could suffer from it. Conversely, if you deal with the issue raised in a professional manner, your customers might actually trust you more.
Once you have polished your product, targeted the correct audience, and have the best media for the job; it becomes a much easier task of publishing. Publishing your media simply refers to post it on the appropriate social networks and in a way that it will be viewed by your target. From there, all you must do is watch, learn, and react whilst you obtain the profits.

Last Thursday we attended an event at the stunning Boodles store in the The Savoy Hotel, hosted by Brook-Dobson Brear. We were inspired by Michael Wainwright, Director of the British jewellery store previously known as ?Boodle and Dunthorne?.
Michael spoke about the transformation of their business and how they have reinvented their brand. We thought it was a great story of the journey of a business, very similar to the transformation our adviser clients have gone through in the lead up to RDR, so we?ve decided to share it with you on our blog.
Founded in 1798 in Liverpool, Boodle and Dunthorne became the city?s leading jewellers. After the sudden death of the Wainwright father and grandfather in 1945, sons Nicholas and Michael took over in 1992. Nicholas assumed the role of responsibility for creative direction of the company and Michael focused on developing the commercial side of the business.
With the growth of international jewellery brands, Michael and Nicholas knew they needed to become more competitive in such a tough market. Their vision was to become the British jewellery brand to compete head to head with the very best in the world. Driven by their desire to gain a more dominant position in the market, they started to look at developing their business and their brand. To drive such growth and achieve success they focused on a number of different elements within their business, and of course, their marketing.
Product
The original product strategy?was to buy in jewellery from a number of suppliers, including six very well-known watch brands. They realised that in order to differentiate themselves, they would need to achieve a more unique product offering. They took action and changed their strategy, hiring jewellery designers in-house in order to create more unique pieces and assign each a different name.
Boodles began focusing on the acquisition of rare and exquisite gemstones, as well as a highly talented in house design team, and the workmanship of leading British master craftsmen. Today Boodles offer over 400 different styles of jewellery, all from its eight main ranges including Raindance and Velocity.
Brand
The transformation of the brand began when the company was re-christened from ?Boodles and Dunthorne? to simply ?Boodles?. Dropping the second name they created a more simplistic, modern and luxurious brand image.
Image
Next, Boodles began to focus on their image in order to differentiate the business from their competitors. They achieved this through looking at all elements of their image, and in particular, the photography used throughout their printed material and in store. Boodles began using their own models for photo shoots, shown wearing the jewellery outdoors, amongst beautiful scenery. This provided them with differentiation from other modern brands that elect to shoot in studio settings.
Client Experience
Aware of the critical importance of the client experience, Boodles decided to look at every element then reengineer the entire process. Focus was given to new shop fronts and internal displays. In collaboration with architect Eva Jiricna, the Boodles stores were transformed into gleaming confections of steel and glass ? the perfect backdrop for sparkling jewels and far removed from the ?country house? exposed beam interiors of the past.
Boodles also began to offer a service to all customers to upgrade their pieces of jewellery, every ten years to a newer product, thereby increasing the longevity of their customer relationships.
Community
To establish their brand image within the community and strengthen their customer relationships, Boodles decided to host and sponsor several large events, bringing together loyal clients and raising their corporate profile. These events include ?The Boodles Challenge Tennis Tournament?, ?Chester Races? and ?The Boodles Boxing Ball?.
Each year these events prove to be a great success, creating a sense of community around their brand. The fact that the events themselves are referred to by the name ?Boodles? is further testament to the strength of their brand.
Brand Expansion
To increase their market, Boodles decided to move their business international. Boodles had been considering a number of locations for international expansion, including the US and the Middle East, but have settled in Hong Kong after identifying Asia as a boom market. Boodles managing director Michael Wainwright said that he will look to mainland China for the company?s next Asian store, Beijing and Shanghai in particular. He also said that he hopes to open a Boodles store in New York within the next five years.
As a further expansion of their brand, Boodles have also decided to move their products online, creating a ?brick and clicks? retail business. Research carried out by Boodles in regards to their target customer, highlighted that they live quite busy lifestyles, with an online store creating added convenience for them.
By focusing on the key marketing elements of their business from product, to brand, to client experience, Boodles achieved and currently hold a dominant position in the jewellery market, competing head to head with the very best in the world.
We feel this is a very interesting and inspiring story that looks at a very effective marketing and business growth strategy. It is very similar to the work we do in our business, with financial advisers increasingly trying to transform their business and increase client engagement, in a changing regulatory environment.
If you would like to read more information on the Boodles brand, please visit their website, where you will find more information on their business, history and products.

PHOENIX (AP) ? Rick Pitino nudged out Billy Donovan for a spot in the Final Four on Saturday when his Louisville team finished the game on a 23-8 run for a 72-68 victory over Florida in the West Regional.
Chane Behanan hit the go-ahead basket with 1:04 left for fourth-seeded Louisville, then after two Cardinals free throws, Florida's Bradley Beal and Erving Walker each missed chances to tie.
The seventh-seeded Gators (26-11) fell in the regional semifinals for the second straight year, while Louisville (30-9) will go to the Final Four for the ninth time, and the second under Pitino.
Russ Smith led Louisville with 19 points and Behanan had 17. The Cardinals played the final 3:58 without point guard Peyton Siva, who fouled out.
The Gators shot 8 for 11 from 3-point range in the first half but didn't make one in the second.
With Snooki pregnant and engaged (!) and The Situation in rehab, the producers of Jersey Shore are obviously concerned. For the stars, sure, but mostly for the show.
Apparently they are worried the show will lose its edge - being a show about a bunch of drunk, sex-crazed rowdies - and are looking to phase the two out.
Newer, crazier cast members are apparently being sought.
I understand Apple has limited the purchase of Apple Care Plus to within the first 30 days of purchase. However for online orders, does the "purchase" start when the order is placed or when the iPad is shipped/received?
I ask because my order was placed March 12, but is not expected to arrive until April 12. If I do not want to purchase in advance, am I SOL?
LONDON (AP) -Insults have started flying between Manchester United and Manchester City more than a month before the Premier League title contenders go head-to-head for the last time this season.
The rivals don't meet until April 30 but the tension from a close title race is already showing.
Riled that City official Patrick Vieira said United's decision to allow Paul Scholes to rescind his retirement was a desperate move, United manager Alex Ferguson criticized City for recalling Carlos Tevez after he ended his strike.
"Desperation? Paul Scholes is the best midfielder of the last 20 years," Ferguson said Friday. "Desperation? On Wednesday, they played a player who refused to go on the pitch and the manager had said would never play for them again. What is that?"
City takes on Stoke on Saturday with Tevez again in the squad following his six-month absence, leaving defending champion United likely to need a victory over Fulham on Monday to maintain its slender one-point lead at the top of the standings.
Ferguson said he will have a strong team at Old Trafford on Monday after Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Fabio Da Silva, Tom Cleverley and Paul Pogba all returned to action from injury or illness in a reserve match on Thursday.
"It puts us in a position where we have quite a strong squad now," Ferguson said. "We are only waiting on Nani and Michael Owen. We expect both of them to restart training next week.
"Every game is must-win now. That is no issue for me. I have been used to that for years."
That could be interpreted as another jibe at City's expense, with United having won 12 of its English record 19 league titles since City won the last of its two in 1968.
Tevez is again likely to be on the bench against Stoke after making his first appearance in six months as a substitute in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Chelsea.
City hopes to have captain Vincent Kompany back after the defender missed three games because of a calf injury. His central defensive partner Joleon Lescott is out with a hip problem.
Also Saturday, Chelsea hosts Tottenham needing victory to close on its London rival and maintain its chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
Tottenham is on a four-match winless streak - its worst run of the season - and will again be without winger Aaron Lennon because of a hamstring injury. Lennon trained Thursday but is not fit enough to play.
Striker Emmanuel Adebayor is also a major doubt for Tottenham with a hamstring injury, while Ledley King will have a late fitness test on his long-standing knee problem.
Arsenal hosts Aston Villa seeking to add to the six straight wins that have taken the Gunners a point ahead of Spurs and put them in position for third place, which brings automatic qualification rather than a spot in the Champions League playoffs.
Also Saturday, Bolton hosts fellow struggler Blackburn, Liverpool hosts Wigan, Norwich hosts Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sunderland hosts Queens Park Rangers and Swansea hosts Everton.
Newcastle is at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
League Championship leader Southampton hosts Doncaster on Saturday, when second-place Reading hosts Blackpool and West Ham is at Burnley.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? After winning five NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers, Derek Fisher chose the West-leading Oklahoma City Thunder as the team where he wants to go for No. 6.
Fisher signed with the Thunder for the remainder of the season on Wednesday, not quite a week after he was traded to Houston by the Lakers and subsequently bought out of his contract instead of playing with the Rockets.
He picked jersey No. 37, the same as his age, and hoped to play right away and perhaps be able to maintain his streak of consecutive games played.
More importantly, he wants to continue his run of postseason success.
"Right now, they sit on top of the Western Conference and I'm just hopeful that the things that I do, the things that I've always brought to every team I've ever played on, can be the right mix to help these guys continue to do whatever it is that they're already doing," Fisher said before the game.
The Thunder lost their backup point guard, Eric Maynor, to a season-ending knee injury in January but hadn't made any moves to address the position. All-Star Russell Westbrook had been taking on extra minutes as the starter, with rookie Reggie Jackson taking over as his backup.
Then Fisher became available when the Lakers decided to acquire Ramon Sessions from Cleveland and promote Steve Blake to the starter. Fisher had won five titles alongside Kobe Bryant in two separate stints with the Lakers, with stops in Utah and Golden State in between.
He had played 13 of his 16 NBA seasons with Los Angeles before getting dealt away at last week's trade deadline.
"I think that I was surprised by it, but since then I've very much realized that it's not so much about what went wrong and why it happened but more so where I'm going next and the next chapter of my life," Fisher said, declining to speak in depth about his divorce with the team until later.
Fisher figures to take over Jackson's backup minutes, although coach Scott Brooks called the 2011 first-round draft pick one of the Thunder's "important pieces going forward." Fisher has averaged 8.7 points and 3.1 assists during his career and has played in 209 playoff games in 13 trips to the postseason.
"He has winner all over his DNA," Brooks said. "You can never have enough winners in your locker room, and we have a locker room full of them. He just gives us one more winner."
Fisher played with the Lakers when they knocked Oklahoma City out in the first round of the 2010 playoffs on their way to a second straight championship. He said he's always respected the team because he's observed that the players play with energy every single game.
That approach was reinforced when he met with general manager Sam Presti while he was going through the process of clearing waivers and becoming a free agent.
"It's very clear that there's one common goal, and that's to maximize the abilities of every player on the team and try to bring, at some point, a championship to Oklahoma City," Fisher said.
Oklahoma City made room for Fisher by waiving forward Ryan Reid, a second-round pick in 2010 who had played in only five games over the past season and a half.
"He's got great poise, he's got a great basketball IQ, great recognition on both ends of the floor," Presti said of Fisher. "He understands the league, he's a well-regarded corner shooter and someone that we feel like can settle you down and make plays for you throughout the body of the game."
Presti praised Jackson and reserve Royal Ivey for filling Maynor's minutes over the past two months well enough to give Oklahoma City the league's third-best record, behind Miami and Chicago, heading into Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
"We have a lot of confidence in the group that we have in place, obviously, to be where we are right now," Presti said. "We know we can improve. ... We feel like Derek's someone that can help enhance where we are currently."
Two-time scoring champion Kevin Durant endorsed Fisher's arrival even before he had officially signed and envisioned him as a mentor to the young team who's still able to hit clutch shots and defend. He was hesitant to look forward and assess Fisher's impact on the Thunder's championship hopes.
"You can ask as many questions as you want, but it's a little different if you go through it yourself," Durant said. "I'm just going to just try to pick his brain as much as I can about the game of basketball but at the same time, of course if I want to get to that goal, I'll have to experience it myself."

Teachers, parents trump peers in keeping teens engaged in schoolPublic release date: 20-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

ANN ARBOR, Mich.Teachers and parents matter more than peers in keeping adolescents engaged in school, according to a new study that counters the widespread belief that peers matter most in the lives of adolescents.
"We were surprised to find that most adolescents continue to be influenced greatly by their teachers and parents when it comes to school engagement," said Ming-Te Wang, the lead author of the study and a faculty research fellow at University of Michigan Institute for Social Research.
"Even though this is a stage when young people are moving toward establishing autonomy and independence, teachers and parents remain important in helping them stay involved in school, and in extracurricular activities. And this is true for all ethnic groups and races, and across all the economic groups we studied."
For the study, which was published in the current issue of the peer-reviewed journal Child Development, Wang and co-author Jacquelynne Eccles analyzed longitudinal data on nearly 1,500 teens from 23 schools in the Washington, D.C., area. Students were interviewed in 7th, 9th and 11th grades, with researchers asking about four indicators of student engagement: compliance with school rules, participation in extracurricular activities, identification with one's school and value placed on education.
The researchers also asked about the support students received from teachers, parents and peers, and assessed school records and other information.
The analysis was funded by the Spencer Foundation. The data are part of the U-M Maryland Adolescent Development in Context Study, also known as the Prince George's County Family Study, funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and by the National Institutes of Health.
As the researchers predicted, school engagement declined from 7th to 11th grade, more steeply among boys than among girls.
"The overall declines may result from a mismatch between the student's developmental stage and the secondary school environment," Wang said. "In comparison to elementary schools, middle and high schools are larger, more departmentalized and more performance-oriented.
"This results in fewer opportunities for teachers and students to develop strong personal relationships, and fewer chances for students to participate in extracurricular activities at a time when they need relationships with adults outside their families to feel competent in their school work."
The greater engagement of girls may be a result of gender socialization and differential expectations of parents and teachers, according to Eccles.
"For instance, parents tend to monitor girls' progress more closely, correct girls' mistakes and make decisions for girls more than they do for boys," she said. "These practices may communicate to girls, more so than to boys, the importance of regulating progress toward one's goals and meeting those goals.
"Teachers also tend to respond differently to boys and girls in the classroom, in ways that may lead students to believe that certain behavior patterns associated with their gender are expected by their teachers."
For both boys and girls, the researchers found that social support from adults, particularly from teachersin the form of encouraging engagement in school, emphasizing the value of an education and facilitating participation in extracurricular activitiescould counteract the negative influence of peers. They also found that peers were just as likely to exert a positive rather than a negative influence on teen school engagement.
"Adolescence is a period when relationships with adults who aren't your parents become increasingly important," Wang said. "Our results suggest that supportive teachers play a particularly important role in keeping teens engaged in school."
