ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Scientists have created new kinds of particles, 1/100th the diameter of a human hair, that spontaneously assemble themselves into structures resembling molecules made from atoms. These new particles come together, or "self-assemble," to form structures in patterns that were previously impossible to make and hold promise for manufacturing advanced optical materials and ceramics.
The method, described in the latest issue of the journal Nature, was developed by a team of chemists, chemical engineers, and physicists at New York University (NYU), the Harvard School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, the Harvard Department of Physics, and Dow Chemical Company.
The method is centered on enhancing the architecture of colloids -- small particles suspended within a fluid medium. Colloidal dispersions are composed of such everyday items as paint, milk, gelatin, glass, and porcelain, but their potential to create new materials remains largely untapped.
Previously, scientists had succeeded in building rudimentary structures from colloids. But the ability use colloids to design and assemble complex 3-dimensional structures, which are vital to the design of advanced optical materials, has been limited. This is, in part, because colloids lack directional bonds, which are necessary to control particle self-assembly as well as to enhance complexity while maintaining the structural integrity of these creations. Such assemblies serve as the building blocks of the natural world -- e.g., atoms and molecules -- but they are rare in the colloidal domain.
"What this method aimed to do was to use nature's properties for atoms and apply them to the colloidal world," explained NYU chemistry professor Marcus Weck, one of the study's coauthors.
"Chemists have a whole periodic table of atoms to choose from when they synthesize molecules and crystals," added coauthor Vinothan Manoharan, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Physics at Harvard. "We wanted to develop a similar 'construction set' for making larger-scale molecules and crystals."
In developing colloids with such properties, the researchers engineered chemical "patches" that can form directional bonds, thus allowing for the assembly of 3-dimensional "lattices" with only a few connections between particles, an important design element for many advanced materials. Without directional bonding, such structures are unstable.
The trick was establishing bonding capabilities on the patches. The scientists did so by using single strands of DNA, which scientists at NYU and elsewhere have previously employed to organize small particles. In the method described in Nature, these strands of DNA served as "sticky ends" to which particle patches could adhere.
"What this means is we can make particles that attach only at the patches, and then we can program them so only specific kinds of particles attach at those patches," said coauthor and NYU physics professor David Pine. "This gives us tremendous flexibility to design 3-dimensional structures."
The researchers added that the specificity of DNA interactions between patches means that colloids with different properties, such as size, color, chemical functionality, or electrical conductivity, could lead to the production of new materials. These potentially include 3-dimensional electrically wired networks or photonic crystals to enhance the optical displays of a range of consumer products and to improve the speed of computer chips.
Additional coauthors included Yufeng Wang (NYU), Yu Wang (NYU), Dana R. Breed (Dow Chemical Co.), Lang Feng (NYU), and Andrew D. Hollingsworth (NYU).
Key work was performed at NYU's Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, an interdisciplinary laboratory supported by the National Science Foundation.
The research was also supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (MR-0820341, ChE-0911460, DMR-0923251).

TORONTO (Reuters) - Toronto's main stock index rose on Tuesday, led higher by financial and energy stocks on light volumes, as investors tried to assess the impact of super storm Sandy on the United States.
Sandy, one of the biggest storms to ever hit the country, left at least 15 people dead and caused significant power disruptions, though some market players had expected even more devastation.
The Canadian market felt the effect of the closure of U.S. stock markets for the second straight day, with trading volumes well below average.
"The disruption caused by the storm with the closure of the financial markets in the United States is having the major effect," said Gavin Graham, president of Graham Investment Strategy.
"Given how lackluster the trading is, how low the volumes are, people are very reluctant to take positions," he said.
Volume on the Toronto Stock Exchange was light at about 16 million shares, just over half of Friday's 30 million shares traded around the same time.
Some energy stocks were among the biggest gainers.
Suncor Energy Inc
The energy sub group, one of the biggest on the index, was up 0.64 percent even though Brent crude prices fell.
"It's a reminder that stuff happens, whether it is an act of God like Hurricane Sandy or Katrina, or alternatively political uncertainty like the Iranian situation in the Persian Gulf," Graham said.
Financials, up 0.44 percent, played the biggest role of any sector in lifting the market, led by Royal Bank of Canada
Materials stocks were up 0.63 percent, helped by gains in gold companies. Barrick Gold rose 1 percent to C$39.99.
At midmorning, the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> was up 69.19 points, or 0.56 percent, at 12,381.94. All the ten main groups within the index were positive. (Additional reporting By Claire Sibonney; Editing by Jeffrey Hodgson)

(Reuters) - The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 14 of the 16 crew members who abandoned the replica tall ship HMS Bounty off North Carolina in rough seas caused by Hurricane Sandy, using helicopters on Monday to pluck them from life rafts.
A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter later recovered crew member Claudene Christian, 42, who was described as unresponsive, while continuing to search for the 63-year-old captain of the ship, which sank in 18-foot seas.
Christian taken to Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, where a hospital spokesman said she was in "critical condition."
The crew of the Bounty took to life rafts about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina when the vessel began to take on water about 160 miles from the storm's eye, the Coast Guard said.
The three-mast, 180-foot (55-meter) ship, built for the 1962 movie "Mutiny on the Bounty," sank after water pumps apparently failed.
As the 16 crew members were abandoning the Bounty wearing cold-water survival suits and life jackets, the final three on board were washed overboard, said Coast Guard spokesman Chief Nyx Cangemi, relaying eyewitness reports from the search and rescue team. One of them was pulled onto a life raft but the other two remained at sea, he said.
The 14 were rescued from two lifeboats with canopies, the Coast Guard said.
A C-130 Hercules airplane and a third rescue helicopter continued the search for the two missing crew members, and two Coast Guard cutters were on the way to assist them, Cangemi said.
VETERAN CAPTAIN
Captain Robin Walbridge worked on the Bounty for 17 years, said his wife, Claudia McCann, contacted by telephone at the couple's home in St. Petersburg, Florida.
"That was his passion," McCann said. "He's the best captain in the industry. ... There's not too many captains that can sail that kind of ship."
She said she was confident that he, as captain, was the last to leave the ship, wearing survival gear.
"That's the image I have in my head. I'm sure he made sure his crew were all tucked in their life boats before he got off the ship," McCann said.
The ship was on its way from New London, Connecticut, to St. Petersburg, Florida, said Tracie Simonin, director of the HMS Bounty Organization LLC. She said she was unsure how the captain attempted to navigate the storm.
"My understanding is that they were looking to sail around the hurricane," said Jane Pena, 31, who piloted the first rescue helicopter to reach the scene.
"They originally thought they'd be OK," Pena said. "We thought about flying deep water pumps out to them, but they were taking on so much water that we wouldn't be able to get enough pumps to them."
The vessel was taking on water and also without propulsion, stuck in 40 mile-per-hour winds and heavy seas, the Coast Guard said.
"By the time we got there, the ship was submerged but it was upright and you could see the three masts sticking out of the water," said Pena.
The original Bounty, a British transport vessel, gained infamy for a mutiny in Tahiti in 1789.
The 1962 movie starred Marlon Brando as lead mutineer Fletcher Christian. The replica Bounty has appeared in numerous documentaries and feature films including "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" with Johnny Depp, according to the ship's website.

A New York college student who started a blog on self-acceptance in order to help other young women deal with body image issues has become a viral hero ? and not just because she?s trying to boost the self-esteem of others.?
?
Stella Boonshoft, who writes The Body Love Blog and who has polycystic ovarian syndrome, put her curves on full display when she posted a photo of herself in her underwear on her Tumblr site. And here?s the best part:
?
She wrote, "My body must be a revolution," along with the photo.? She captioned it, "Picture might be considered obscene because subject is not thin. And we all know that only skinny people can show their stomachs and celebrate themselves. I am not going to stand for that. This is my body, not yours. MINE." BRAVO STELLA!?
?
"I think people are cruel because they are uncomfortable seeing an image of people who are not thin," said Boonshoft on the Today show. "I found that after so many years of struggling with my body image that really there was no way to justify the bullying as a child and as a teen."
?
Brandon Stanton, who appeared with Boonshoft on the Today, created the Humans of New York project, a collection of street portraits in the city. He initially took his own picture of Boonshoft clothed but later made a decision to use Boonshoft?s underwear shot, which she says mortified her at first.
?
"It took a lot of years of soul searching to decide this isn't right, and I finally came to a place where I was really happy with the way that I looked."
?
"I wanted to leave a message to the bullies who tormented me."
Her post has since become a cyberspace hit with more than 2.4 million views on Facebook.? Plus, more than 80,000 people shared her photo from her Tumblr page.
It?s tough being a teenager today ? the bullying, the misuse of technology, the pressure to be thin. I can only wish that my own daughter will have enough courage to embrace her body and to stand up to others who criticize her, no matter what she looks like, the way that Stella Boonshoft has done.

OTTAWA ? Just in time for Halloween, Canada?s most decorated literary doyenne ? Margaret Atwood ? has co-written a serialized zombie novel with a promising British author that will be posted chapter by chapter on the Canadian-based story-sharing website Wattpad.
Atwood, the Booker- and Giller-prizewinning author of such renowned works as The Blind Assassin, Oryx and Crake and Alias Grace, was scheduled to upload the first chapter of the new comic-horror novel ? titled The Happy Zombie Sunrise Home and co-written by 37-year-old U.K. writer Naomi Alderman ? on Wednesday to www.wattpad.com.
Alderman?s first chapter and Atwood?s second instalment are also expected to be available Wednesday, with other chapters to appear weekly until early January.
In an excerpt of the story made available to Postmedia News, Atwood?s narrator sets the scene of an apparent zombie infestation in Toronto, where the risen undead roam about the city in search of living humans to devour.
(Note to Canada: Let the metaphorical interpretations of Hogtown?s night of the living dead pour forth.) ?I for one am not about to allow my arm be chewed off just because another person ? another former person ? is feeling like a snack,? Atwood?s unfazed, rhubarb-growing, zombie-killing retiree, Clio, a cucumber-cool, garden-tool-wielding resident of upscale Rosedale, states.
Although Atwood has made celebrated and chilling forays into the world of science fiction ? or what she has preferred to label ?speculative fiction? ? with novels such as The Handmaid?s Tale, her embrace of pop culture?s ongoing fascination with zombies (in films such as Dawn/Shaun/Juan of the Dead, and in annual, pre-Halloween corpse parades in towns and cities everywhere) may come as a surprise to her millions of fans in Canada and around the world.
But as a writer who gained national prominence in 1969 with a first novel titled The Edible Woman, the 72-year-old Atwood has evidently been intrigued by cannibalism ? at least on a figurative level ? for decades.
?We are so proud that Margaret and Naomi chose Wattpad as a way to quickly and easily share this work with a global audience of millions,? Wattpad CEO Allen Lau, the Canadian high-tech entrepreneur who launched the storytelling website in 2006, said in announcing the authors? new zombie novel.
?They both understand the new patterns of engagement that are happening around serially published stories,? he added.
?The majority of people on Wattpad are reading on their mobile phones, so we believe there is a great fit between serialization and today?s mobile-first, social networked culture. The chapter-by-chapter model is something that is helping many writers connect with readers to find success.?
The two writers embarked on the zombie project after Atwood selected Alderman ? who already has several published works ? as her apprentice wordsmith through the Rolex Mentor and Prot?g? Arts Initiative, described as ?an international program that pairs established artists with emerging artists in the fields of literature, architecture, dance, film, music, theatre, and visual arts for a year of creative collaboration.?
In a statement about the zombie tale issued by Wattpad, the two writers are said to have enjoyed ?setting each other up? by ending instalments in a way that requires the other author to ?write her way out of an emotionally heavy scene? or ? in one case of retaliation by Alderman ? ?leaving frightful problems for Atwood to solve? following an ?insanely action-packed? sequence of events.
?The whole process kept me on my toes; it was a lot of fun,? Atwood said in a statement. ?We shared interests in technology, the history of religion, and little-known monsters.?
Alderman acknowledged that ?it was pretty daunting to know that my words would be sitting next to those of my personal writing hero. But once I managed to swallow that ? like a zombie chewing on delicious brains ? it became gleefully joyful to think of some interesting challenges and new wrinkles on what we?d done already.?
This year, Atwood agreed to lend her name to a new online poetry prize ? ?The Attys? ? sponsored by Wattpad, which claims a global community of about 10 million users.
Atwood, as part of an online collection titled Thriller Suite, has posted original poems of her own at the Wattpad website. And she has promoted the social media tool for writers as an important new incubator of literary talent.
Atwood told Postmedia News in August that Wattpad ?allows people in developing countries who may have no books, no libraries, no schools and no infrastructure ? but who may have a cellphone ? to have access to both reading and writing. And it allows early writers to practise their skills with a sympathetic audience.?
Atwood, who won the 1966 Governor General?s Award for her poetry collection The Circle Game, has a track record of embracing new publishing-related technologies.
She invented a device called the Long Pen to allow her to conduct virtual book signings around the world. She was also an early adapter to Twitter and recently published the short story I?m Starved For You as a $2.99 e-book with a U.S.-based digital publisher.
?I like to try things out for myself to see how they work ? fuller report later,? Atwood said in August. ?A lot of earlier publication modes are making a comeback via the Internet, serial publication among them.?

He?ll have to wait until 2019 to open it, but it looks like Crown Ltd. boss James Packer will realize his dream of having a casino in Sydney, Australia. Packer has long desired to build a $1b hotel-casino in the Barangaroo redevelopment in Sydney Harbor, but rival operator Echo Entertainment?s Star Casino holds a monopoly license on casinos in Sydney until 2019. Packer already had the support of New South Wales? ruling Liberal party and Premier Barry O?Farrell, but the opposition Labor party has now agreed to back Packer?s casino aspirations, subject to certain conditions.
Chief among these conditions is maintaining Echo?s monopoly until 2019 so as to avoid requiring the state to pay hefty compensation. Crown also won?t be able to install any video poker machines on the premises, but the focus of Crown?s new venue will be on the Asian VIP gambling market, and whales don?t play the pokies, so no big whoop. Labor also insisted on the development providing ?a fair rate of return for the state,? which is sufficiently vague to allow room for haggling down the road.
The project is expected to be formally accepted by O?Farrell?s cabinet on Monday but will still face a lot of legislative i-dotting and t-crossing, and there is some grumbling that NSW should put the second casino license out for public tender lest it miss out on extra revenue that a bidding war could provide. But no tender would be required if Crown could demonstrate that its facility would offer a ?unique service.?
Earlier this year, Packer had applied to increase Crown?s roughly 10% stake in Echo to 25%, reportedly for the purpose of installing enough friendly votes on Echo?s board to compel Echo to share its monopoly license via a joint venture with Crown. The Australian reported that newly installed Echo chairman John O?Neill admitted having a ?preliminary? and ?informal? discussion with Crown on a potential JV. However, Packer?s gambit was complicated after Asian gambling outfit Genting took its own stake in Echo with an idea toward entering into its own JV. Whether either party will now follow up on those share purchase applications remains to be seen.

David Walsh, founder of Tasmania?s popular Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) and member of the Punters Club mega-whale sports betting outfit, has reached a settlement on his $37m back-tax court fight with the Australian Tax Office (ATO). The ATO went after Walsh for years of unpaid taxes on his share of the Punters Club?s winnings, based on the ATO?s opinion that the Club was a business and thus the winnings represented taxable earnings. From the start, Walsh maintained that he was willing to pay taxes on his winnings going forward, but resented the ATO?s obsession with the past. Neither party has revealed the size of the check Walsh wrote to end the matter, but Walsh issued a statement saying the matter had been ?completely resolved.?
Yet to be resolved is Aussie betting outfit Sportsbet?s case against Eddie Hayson, owner of the Stiletto brothel in Camperdown, a suburb of Sydney. Hayson ran up a $1.7m marker with Sportsbet and the two parties had worked out a deal for Hayson to pay it off via installments, with the understanding that the authorities would be involved if Hayson didn?t honor the agreement. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Hayson owes a further $1m to bookie Tom Waterhouse, but at least that debt is covered by caveats attached to Hayson?s properties. (Waterhouse gets the cathouse!) When Hayson failed to make his Sportsbet payments, a date was set this Tuesday in NSW Supreme Court, but Hayson failed to appear. It?s not known whether Hayson appeared Wednesday in a separate court hearing regarding a request for a restraining order made by Hayson?s ex-wife. Stay classy, Eddie?

Army leaders announced Monday they will open the Rifleman and Manpack Radio competitions Monday with the defense industry eager to tackle a contract that could yield a multi-billion dollar purse as the Army looks to reinvigorate their aging communications architecture.
The Army has listed its Network and communications systems as the service?s top modernization priority. The Pentagon canceled the Joint Tactical Radio System. Army officials, however, look to salvage the Rifleman and Manpack Radio systems that fell under JTRS.
General Dynamics has received an order from the Army for 3,726 Manpacks. Army officials have ordered another 19,327 Rifleman Radios splitting the order between General Dynamics and Thales.
Despite the orders, the Army chose to open the competition to bidders. Army leaders said on the floor at the Association of the U.S. Army that they have not lost faith in either General Dynamics or Thales to build the radios, but its in the best interests of the Army to review as many offers as possible.
Heidi Shyu, the Army?s acquisition chief, has made clear her desire to instill as much competition as possible in order to save money.
The Manpacks have also already run into problems in testing at the White Sands Missile Range where the Army holds the Network Integration Evaluation. Independent Pentagon testers found the Manpacks didn?t hold up in simulated combat conditions. General Dynamics contends the conditions were too extreme with the multitude of radios in the desert causing problems with all radios in the area.
A host of companies are expected to bid to build the two radio systems to include BAE Systems, Harris as well as General Dynamic and Thales. With so few defense contracts up for bid, this one will draw a considerable amount of attention.

?I personally believe we developed language because of our deep inner need to complain. ? ~Jane Wagner
Complaining?we all do it. Sometimes we do it a lot. Mostly we don?t recognize just how much we do it.? Personally I sometimes think that complaining is sort of like anger, but without real enthusiasm.
We complain about the weather (as if we could change it), we whine about the price of gas, we grumble about our bosses, other drivers, shoddy workmanship, poor service.? If you can name it, we complain about it.
A number of years ago while a presenter at a weekend wellness retreat, one of the other organizers offered all of us a challenge : Would we, could we, go without complaining for our time together?
For her model, she followed a program outlined in the book ?Complaint Free World? by Will Bowen.? The practice began with wearing a purple rubber bracelet on your wrist.? Simple enough.? Each time we caught ourselves complaining we were to switch the bracelet to the opposite wrist.? Oh yes, if we noticed someone else complaining, we were to point it out to them so they could move their bracelet.? And yes too, if we complained that THEY were complaining, WE had to move our bracelets as well.
And how exactly did Bowen define complaining?? He said it was ?expressing discontent, pain or grief with the way things are?.
The practice also included? criticizing or gossiping.
In Bowen?s book, he would have us follow the program for 21 days, restarting the clock each time we found ourselves needing to ?switch wrists?.
If you find yourself wondering what?s so bad about complaining you first need to take a step back and recognize the power that words have to shape the reality we experience.? When we change the words we use, we can also change the way we think and act.? This is an amazing concept I know, but just consider the following statements:
It?s pretty obvious which statement feels more positive, more ?in charge? of life as it?s happening,? less reactive, more proactive.
Bowen reminds us that complaining, can become a habitual practice and lead to ?focusing on what we don?t want?.? In doing so we direct more energy and more attention to the negative than the positive.
When it comes to making changes which make life better, dissatisfaction is an necessary first step.? But if we stay there, says Bowen, ?we never move forward to brighter vistas. Were the great leaders of the United States also great complainers? I?d have to say no. These important men and women allowed dissatisfaction to drive them to great visions, and their passion for these visions inspired others to follow them.?
In dialing down the quantity of our complaint factory output, we go through stages:
All ideas have power, and this one certainly does.? More than 10 million ?Complaint Free? bracelets have been delivered to folks in over 106 countries. Here?s the link for the ?Complaint Free World? site, and a link to purchase your very own purple bracelets for a buck each.? What?s to complain about that?

Yesterday we brought you the first photos of HTC and Verizon's 5-inch, 1080p Android smartphone, codenamed "DLX," along with a full list of specifications. By any standard, the DLX is a super-high-end phone, packing a quad-core Snapdragon S4 CPU -- generally considered to be the fastest SoC around -- and the highest-resolution phone display available, in the form of a 1080p SuperLCD3 panel. Throw in Verizon's 4G LTE network, and you've got an awful lot of telephone.
One area that's easy for some to find fault with, however, is the battery. Read on to find out why.

The latest incident at Lenamore Park, on Saturday at around 7.20pm, is being treated by police as a hate crime.
Janette Nelson was talking to neighbours at the back of the property when flammable liquid was poured through the letter box of the house and set alight.
The single mother and her children have been staying with relatives since the house was set on fire during a previous arson attack just over a week ago.
She had only returned to the property to gather up some personal items.
She managed to extinguish Saturday evening's fire and escaped unhurt. Minor scorch damage was caused to the door.
Her children, a two-year-old boy and girls, aged seven and 12, were not at home this time.
Janette's sister Lizzie McInerney says the family is distraught.
"She's terrified," the victim's sister said. "They are trying to kill her for reasons we don't understand."
Ms McInerney added: "The kids are absolutely heartbroken...[they are having] nightmares, crying all the time.
"It's something that kids that age don't need to experience."
When asked about the future, she said the family would have to "move out, move away from it."
Ms McInerney said although her sister did not want to leave, "she has to."
Alliance councillor Linda Cleland described the latest attack as "attempted murder."
"This is not acceptable.
"These people are now living in fear, you know, they can't stay in a place that they have loved and enjoyed for five years."
The councillor told UTV that she is doing everything in her power to get the Nelsons rehoused.
Their home was last targeted just over a week ago. The family of four was in the house when the arson attack took place.
Ms Nelson managed to pass her children out through an upstairs window to a neighbour who had climbed up onto an adjoining roof of their burning house.
They were left badly shaken but not hurt.
A 32-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of intimidation in relation to that incident was released on police bail.
Previously, sectarian graffiti was painted on the walls, windows were smashed and a car was damaged.

Twitter is one of the newest social media websites on the internet, giving bloggers and other internet users a completely new way to communicate with one another. Twitter is all about micro blogging, or communicating through small, quick spurts of content. Anyone who knows how to benefit from regular blogging formats can also find advantages in using Twitter, which offers the same benefits of blogging but in a quicker and more bite sized format. Here are ten tips for effectively marketing on twitter.
1 ? First and foremost, you need to know the difference between posting often and spamming. You do not want to spam Twitter. Instead, you are going to want to post meaningful, relevant and readable content that your subscribers are going to look forward to. Spamming is the ultimate mistake that many twitter marketers end up making early on in their marketing endeavors. Twitter is a social network, not a medium for spamming, and if you overwhelm your readers with spam, no one will stop by anymore. It may be tempting to spam, but you will never benefit from it, so do not waste your time.
?
2 ? Know what you intend to promote when you start posting on Twitter. This is absolutely paramount when it comes to understanding how to get the most out of twitter marketing in order to drive business to your website or your door. If you know your product well, and you understand what it is going to take to market it, then you are already a step ahead of everyone else, and this is a really good place for you to be.
3 ? It is vital that you know what kind of information you need to put out there, both when you?re writing your own Tweets and when you are responding to the messages of others.
?
When you have a planned out routine for how you will communicate with other businesses online, you will be more successful with Twitter and those who you communicate with on the service.
4 ? One of the greatest boosts to your Twitter marketing endeavor will be to learn how to communicate effectively on Twitter. You can use twitter as a medium for conversation, but only if you know how to communicate effectively with those who are reading your Twitter feed.
5 ? In order to get the most out of your Twitter marketing endeavor, it is vital that you learn how to participate in the community, communicating properly in the process. Twitter is largely a community based social networking site, so while you may be blogging on the site for your own business purposes, you will not get anywhere unless you are willing to participate in the conversation, communicating with other businesses, consumers and other individuals as well to get the word out about your business and to share something of yourself with the rest of the community.
6 ? Make the most out of your account. Create a profile page with a picture and some information about your company. This allows the people who are reading your Twitter feed to get to know you better, which is what social networking sites like Twitter are really all about. The more your readers are able to get to know you, the more likely they will return time and time again to see what you are writing about.
7 ? Have a plan going in, if you want to get the most out of your Twitter endeavor. Do some research and get to know what Twitter is really all about before you start posting on your own. Devise a basic outline for posting, and once you have a good solid plan you can get started. The better planned out your endeavor is, the more you will be able to benefit from marketing your business, product or service through Twitter.
8 ? Avoid over promoting your product. While you can and should post about your product or service in your twitter posts, do not make this the sole focus of your Twitter account. Post all kinds of relevant information about your company, your products, the industry and anything else that is relevant, rather than overwhelming your readers with posts on a single topic. If you?re selling a product and using Twitter to accomplish it, your readers will expect some marketing and product promotion, but you must take absolute care not to overwhelm them with it if you want your readers to continue following your Twitter feed.
9 ? Facilitate conversation! Nobody said Twitter had to be all about sharing information; you can also facilitate conversation by asking questions. Take polls, ask thoughtful questions and come up with other unique ways to get your readers to respond to you in order to better market yourself on Twitter. Conversation is an important part of marketing your company through Twitter, so get your readers talking by asking smart questions in search of smart answers.
10 ? Follow relevant Twitter feeds. When you ?follow? a new Twitter feed, the owner of that feed is notified. By notifying Twitter feed authors that you?re reading them, you are cluing them in to your existence, which will build traffic for your own marketing campaign as well.
Follow these ten basic strategies for improving your marketing effort on Twitter and you will notice a big difference in how much traffic Twitter can bring to your business. Marketing on Twitter is not difficult, but there are some basic rules that you need to follow if you want to be successful in such an endeavor. Whether you are selling a product or a service, or just trying to gain attention for your web presence, Twitter is an advantageous way to attract interest in who you are and what your company is all about.

Ella Romanos, CEO of Plymouth-based indie gaming company Remode tells us about what visitors can look forward to during this year?s ExPlay Festival in Bath.
Over the last few years, we have seen games increasingly become part of the cultural landscape of the UK. More people than ever are playing games, and the market and UK industry is growing despite a tough economic climate. The games industry significantly contributes to the UK economy, and awareness of games across government, education, the public and the media has become almost ubiquitous.
One area to shine a spotlight on is the South West, which was recently highlighted by Develop magazine as a hub of growing game development talent and industry. The South West did in the past have several large developers, but this has declined in the last decade and the area had lost recognition as a development hub. However, over the past few years, smaller studios, driven by the lower barriers to entry created by digital distribution, and then mobile games, have started up. These studios have been growing and have been drawing talent from local university graduates, as well as experienced talent that remained from those larger studios, and those who had relocated locally for lifestyle reasons. The South West has a legacy of creativity and of small studios, who partly due to the lack of investment in the area have often remained small but focused on quality and creativity.
Two years ago, ExPlay Festival was founded to see if we could nurture the growing industry and build a community to support and enhance it. ExPlay?s mission is to support companies, freelancers, individuals, students and academic institutions, and showcase the South West to the rest of the UK. Last year was the first major games festival, held in Plymouth, with speakers including Games Workship creator Ian Livingstone OBE, TIGA CEO Richard Wilson and The Guardian Games Correspondent Keith Stuart, alongside which there are now other events including monthly meetups in Plymouth and Bristol, game jams held through the year and a 2-day Bootcamp for startup studios (supported by Creative iNET in the South West). After a very successful first year, ExPlay festival returns this year in Bath, with Edge magazine as media sponsor, and a strong line up of speakers. The community has gained a national presence and this year the main ExPlay game jam is supported by the Wellcome Trust and is being held at the Science Museum in London as well as at the Pervasive Media Studios in Bristol.
This year we have speakers including keynotes from Robert Briscoe, one of the creators of indie hit Dear Esther, Hide&Seek founding director Alex Fleetwood and Jo Twist, CEO of UK games industry body UKIE. We also have a great line up of talks including on game design from Clive Lindop and Alex Trowers, ?startup stories? with stories from three successful indie studios who all started up straight from university, ?The Never Ending Story? a panel on writing in games, and ?Cultural Exchange: Japanese Gaming and How it Impacts Us?. We are also very excited to be hosting the inaugural TIGA awards, which will be celebrating the best games, games businesses and people within the industry, with an awards dinner and ceremony on the Thursday evening of the festival. TIGA is the trade industry body that supports all UK games developers, big and small and the awards are a great example of supporting the industry.
Last year?s festival was well received by the local gaming community, who enjoyed the opportunity to network and discuss ideas. This year it promises to reach further across the UK, to celebrate the games industry?s place within British culture.

In the fast moving world of smartphones, giant HD displays just aren't enough anymore. The new hot commodity in the land of mobile is "HD Voice." Sure, the technology isn't exactly brand new, but using it over post-3G high speed networks is. The selling point here is high quality noise cancellation, which allows a phone's user to be heard clearly in the noisiest of environments. The latest device to hop on the bandwagon is Sony's Xperia T. When describing this feature, the herculean consumer electronics maker got downright emotional saying, "you feel closer to the person you are talking to." While we're not too sure about that, HD Voice did impress during our ears-on session. The major caveat here is that this feature requires that both parties have HD Voice capable handsets. So, until this concept becomes more mainstream, Xperia T owners' phone calls are likely to be close, but no cigar.
