Apple's final Snow Leopard update includes security fixes to combat new variants of a pernicious scareware program that masquerades as legitimate security software. According to Apple, Snow Leopard 10.6.8 is able to identify and remove all known variants of the bogus Mac Defender, which attempts to trick Mac users by pretending to detect nonexistent viruses that the victim can remove by purchasing the "full version" of the fake program with credit cards.

Apple released a Snow Leopard update at the end of May that was supposed to discover and remove the Trojan program from infected Macs. However, the cybercriminals behind the scam quickly unleashed immune variants that continue to be a threat. With the 10.6.8 update, Apple hopes to shut down the bogus Mac Defender for good. Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday that Turkey would "mobilize" support to help Palestinians achieve recognition and form their own state. He was addressing reporters after talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Erdogan also said Turkey was prepared to contribute toward Palestinian efforts to form a unity government.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu this week held separate meetings with Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, days after they called off a meeting in Egypt meant to finalize a reconciliation agreement.

Abbas reaffirmed commitment to Palestinian unity saying: "there will be no turning back from the road to reconciliation."

RIM cuts 200 jobs in Waterloo, reports say

Technology giant Research In Motion RIM-Thas kick-started a round of layoffs by issuing pink slips to 200 staff in Waterloo, media in the Southwestern Ontario city reported Monday.

The American public-relations firm that handles media inquiries for the company could not be immediately reached to confirm the reports.

RIM, maker of the BlackBerry, announced Friday that it would cut jobs in an effort to streamline operations. The layoffs would take place over the current quarter. RIM did not say exactly how many jobs would be lost or where cuts would occur.

They are part of a package of changes, including speeding up the launch of new products, designed to shore up the company, which has seen its fortunes flag in the face of increased competition in the smart phone market.

On Friday, as it announced first-quarter earnings, it cut 2012 earnings projections and its stock lost 21.5 per cent of its value, hitting its lowest point in five years. It fell another 6.7 per cent Monday.

Mexico reporter, his son and wife shot to death (AP)

VERACRUZ, Mexico ? A journalist, his wife, and their 21-year-old son were shot to death inside their home in this Gulf coast city Monday, authorities said.

Journalist Miguel Angel Lopez Velasco and his family were shot with a 9 mm handgun, said Veracruz state prosecutor Jorge Yunis.

Lopez Velasco wrote a column about politics and crime and was editorial director for the daily newspaper Notiver. His son had been working as a photographer for the same newspaper.

Yunis said investigators haven't determined a motive in the killings and no one has been arrested.

Earlier this month, state police in Veracruz found the body of reporter Noel Lopez in a clandestine grave. He had been missing since March. The two reporters are not related.

Police said Noel Lopez died of a blow to the head and that soldiers found his body after a man they arrested in the killings of several police officers confessed to killing him and led them to the body.

Noel Lopez worked for the weeklies Horizonte and Noticias de Acayucan and for the daily newspaper La Verdad.

Press freedom groups say Mexico is the most dangerous country in the Americas for journalists. More than 60 reporters have been killed in Mexico since 2000, according to the National Human Rights Commission.

Greek PM warns against default as Europe meets on aid (Reuters)

ATHENS/LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) ? Prime Minister George Papandreou asked Greeks on Sunday to support austerity steps and avoid a "catastrophic" default, as European finance ministers discussed extending tens of billions of euros of aid to Athens.

Addressing the Greek parliament, Papandreou appealed for the nation to accept deeply unpopular tax hikes, spending cuts and privatisation plans which international donors have demanded as a condition for the aid.

"The consequences of a violent bankruptcy or exit from the euro would be immediately catastrophic for households, the banks and the country's credibility," Papandreou said at the start of a confidence debate on his new crisis cabinet.

Greek officials have said the country will face default in mid-July if the European Union and the International Monetary Fund do not hand over a 12 billion euro tranche of emergency loans by then.

Euro zone finance ministers began a two-day meeting in Luxembourg on Sunday evening to decide whether to disburse that tranche, part of a 110 billion euro ($156 billion) bailout of Greece launched in May last year. They will also discuss proposals for a second bailout that could be worth some 120 billion euros and keep Greece funded through 2014.

Spain's economy minister told reporters on the sidelines of the meeting that ministers hoped to reach agreement on Sunday night on disbursement of all of the next loan tranche to Greece.

"We're still discussing... We hope (to have a deal). That's why we are here tonight," Elena Salgado said.

The finance minister of Germany, where political opposition to spending taxpayers' money on bailing out Greece has been rising, was more equivocal.

"We will work today and tomorrow so that we get as far as possible," Wolfgang Schaeuble said. "Greece must fulfill all the necessary preconditions so that it can be paid out on time. Europe will do its part.

OPPOSITION

Facing public protests and dissent in his Socialist party, which has a slim majority in parliament, Papandreou reshuffled his cabinet last week and called a confidence vote for next Tuesday in an effort to push his reforms through the legislature this month.

Political analysts think he is likely to succeed, but public opposition means it is unclear if he can stick to austerity over the long term. Over 10,000 people protested in front of parliament on Sunday, chanting: "We won't pay! We won't pay" and thrusting their open hands forward in a traditional insult.

Opposition leader Antonis Samaras demanded in parliament that Papandreou quit to pave the way for early elections and a renegotiation of the terms of Greece's current bailout.

Greece, with a public debt worth more than 150 percent of its annual economic output and rising, missed debt targets in its initial bailout plan partly because of a deep recession.

In the proposed new bailout scheme, private investors would for the first time share the burden, pledging to maintain their exposure to Greece by voluntarily buying about 30 billion euros of sovereign bonds as their current holdings matured.

But such a debt rollover would be complex and controversial, financially and legally. Key details have not been worked out, and euro zone finance ministers are expected to discuss them in Luxembourg.

Yields on bonds of indebted euro zone states rose sharply last week as markets speculated Greece might fail to obtain more aid. Many investors think that even if it does, its debt problem is so large that a more radical solution is needed, such as imposing deep losses on its creditors.

The head of Pimco, the world's largest bond fund, said in an interview published on Sunday that Europe risked wasting more money for nothing if it kept pumping billions into the weak Greek economy.

"After a year, every indicator has unfortunately worsened, despite the incredible quantity of financial assistance," Mohammed El-Erian told Italy's Corriere della Sera daily.

"All of this has terrible human consequences and it's associated with a transfer of liabilities from private creditors to European taxpayers. Why? Very little is being done to deal with the excess of public debt, and the conditions for higher growth are not being put in place.

"Further on, if this approach is kept up, more money will be wasted to save private creditors and the risk of a disorderly restructuring of the debt will be greater.

EUROPE

There were signs across Europe on Sunday of tensions over austerity measures and economic reforms.

In Madrid, tens of thousands of people marched against the government's handling of an economic slump and the "Euro Pact," which was agreed by euro zone politicians to improve competitiveness across the bloc and has led in Spain to reforms giving companies greater power to hire and fire.

In Dublin, which obtained an 85 billion euro bailout last year, the Sunday Times quoted an unnamed European Central Bank source as criticising Finance Minister Michael Noonan's call to impose losses on senior bond holders in two failed banks.

"It was a good soundbite for the cameras ... Considering the Greek situation, it was the worst possible time for him to make an impression," the source was quoted as saying. The ECB has opposed making those bond holders pay on the grounds that it might destabilise financial markets.

"By the time it comes to paying back the bonds next autumn, Greece may have defaulted. If Greece defaults, Ireland is next," the source said.

In Milan, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said Italy would take the measures it considered right to keep its public finances in order. On Friday, credit rating agency Moody's warned it might cut Italy's rating out of concern over Rome's ability to reduce its heavy public debt burden.

Obama set to unveil Afghan troop cuts (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? President Barack Obama will order his promised US troop drawdown from Afghanistan in a prime time address Wednesday, which one official said would likely see 10,000 soldiers called home this year.

Obama will stick with his vow to begin pulling out US forces after an 18-month troop surge, but apparently heed Pentagon warnings that an overly swift withdrawal could imperil hard won gains against Taliban insurgents.

His broadcast at 8:00 pm (0000 GMT) will take place as political attitudes shift on the war following the killing of Osama bin Laden, other heavy US blows against Al-Qaeda and as US public support ebbs for the grueling conflict.

"The president will address the nation from the White House to lay out his plan for implementing his strategy -- first unveiled in December 2009 -- to draw down American troops from Afghanistan," Obama spokesman Jay Carney said.

A senior defense official said on condition of anonymity that the president would "likely" order the withdrawal of about 10,000 troops from Afghanistan this year. Half would come out this summer and half by the end of 2011.

Another 20,000 troops, part of a 30,000 strong surge ordered in December 2009, would be withdrawn by the end of next year, meaning elevated force levels would remain through two more Afghan summer fighting seasons.

There are currently 99,000 US soldiers in Afghanistan.

The official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, described the numbers as the most "likely" option to be backed by Obama, who has nearly tripled US force strength in Afghanistan since taking office.

Carney branded a flurry of media reports on the size of the drawdown as mere speculation and refused to divulge details of the president's decision, which was finalized earlier on Tuesday.

Obama promised Americans when he unveiled the surge that he would begin to bring soldiers home in July 2011 -- a vow critics panned as offering succor to US enemies.

The months leading up to the drawdown decision have seen a turf war that has drawn in Obama's political team, Pentagon brass and lawmakers keenly aware of voter fatigue over a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Democratic Senator Carl Levin reiterated his argument that improved security conditions would permit Obama to bring home 15,000 combat troops by the end of the year.

"The level of US troop reductions in Afghanistan needs to be significant to achieve its purpose --- letting the Afghan government know we are determined to shift primary responsibility for their security to the Afghan security forces," Levin said.

Another powerful Democrat, Senator John Kerry, said Obama needed to change the US emphasis in Afghanistan.

"We've been enormously successful in stripping Al-Qaeda of its capacity. And we need to reflect that now in the troop presence and in the definition of the mission."

Obama's speech will come less than two months after a daring US forces raid into Pakistan killed Al-Qaeda chief bin Laden, the prime target of the US war on terror launched after the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Since the Afghan mission was partly defined as an effort to disrupt, dismantle and defeat Al-Qaeda, some war critics have questioned why America needs to keep such large troop numbers in Afghanistan.

Carney, however, argued that a key component of the mission was the need to stabilize Afghanistan so it would not revert to a haven for terror groups and could meet a 2014 deadline to assume control of its own security.

Obama is expected to explain that his surge has wrought slow, but significant progress, particularly in southern Afghanistan against the Taliban.

But US discontent on the war is steadily rising, and Obama will be keenly aware of public opinion as he plots his 2012 reelection race.

In a new Pew Research Center survey, 56 percent of respondents said US troops should be brought home as soon as possible, while 39 percent said they should stay in Afghanistan until the situation had stabilized.

Skeptics argue that after the deaths of more than 1,600 US troops and at a cost of nearly $10 billion a month, the conflict is unsustainable.

The decision on withdrawal was complicated by the fragile outreach process that Washington has launched with the Taliban.

Backers of the surge have said the Taliban will only countenance serious reconciliation talks if the group's commanders feel they are under pressure from a strong US military footprint in Afghanistan.
