Remains found in 11 pits in northern Mexico (AP)

MONTERREY, Mexico ? A prosecution official in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon says the army has dug up human remains at 11 pits at an abandoned ranch.

The official in the state prosecutor's office says authorities believe the graves contain at least 11 bodies. The official spoke Saturday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk on the record.

He also says soldiers found mattresses riddled with bullets, spent AK-47 cartridges, big metal barrels and empty containers with gasoline traces. Authorities believe the bodies were burned in the barrels before being buried.

Mass graves with dozens of corpses have been uncovered along the U.S.-Mexico border region in recent months.
