93% 50/50

It's not every day that you can say a film gives charm to the depressing illness that is cancer. Much like Life is Beautiful did for the Holocaust, 50/50 livens an already well mined subject matter, and makes it sparkly and new. This balances humor and the horror of finding out you have cancer, living with it, letting go of people who can't handle it, and ultimately freaking out and accepting whatever fate is bestowed upon you. This type of film usual has all the airs of the original template, Terms of Endearment, mentioned in this film for that particular reason. None of the usual pitfalls apply to this, because everything was organic, fluid, right for the circumstances our main character is going through. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the everyman, with a girlfriend who's too hot for him but without any true depth, and a life that lacks any ambition. His friend is played by Seth Rogen (a producer of the film along with friend Evan Goldberg) who uses his usual sloppy persona, but with a serious depth and love for his friend. We've never seen either of these actors take on roles like these before, each delivering such clearly defined performances that can make anyone re-evaluate their life. Yes, the plot is guessable at best, but it feels so fresh and hilarious that I do not care about the original content. The cast is perfect, some names bigger than others, but all working symbiotically. Great writing, great cast, great movie.
