Deca Sports Extreme (known as Sports Island 3DS in Europe) is the latest in the Deca Sports series. Was Hudson Soft right to bring this to the Nintendo 3DS? Find out after the break.
Deca Sports Extreme is a game which has a collection of sports. The sports in Deca Sports Extreme aren?t precise simulations of the sports they?re meant to represent, but they?re not meant to be. Instead, they?re arcade influenced minigames.
A list of the sports in Deca Sports Extreme:
- Basketball
- Bowling
- Ice Hockey
- Snowball Fight
- Snowmobile Racing
- Target Shooting
- Sumo Wrestling
- Football
- Tennis
- Trampoline
Deca Sports features 10 sports which include your standard Football, Basketball, Tennis, the not so popular Sumo Wrestling and a few more sports.?All the sports maintain the main rules of the sports they represent, but sadly, the developers at Hudson have tried to make the gameplay have an arcade feel, that means making the sport simpler, sadly Hudson have made the sports too simple.
There is a Tournament mode and a Championship mode, both are quite basic, but are welcomed additions. Another welcomed addition of Deca Sports Extreme is the fact that you can continue to unlock moves for specific sports.
Deca Sports Extreme also features customization,?unsurprisingly, it?s a very basic implementation of it.
The graphics are OK, but definitely nothing to write home about because I can see a lot of jagged edges on character models. The backgrounds are bare. There?s not a lot of music in the game, which is OK because this is a sports game, but definitely some catchy music would have helped while you?re navigating the somewhat tedious menus.
The 3D effect is quite good, in fact, it?s one of the few positives of Deca Sports Extreme has. The 3D effect is depth-based 3D, and it works well, especially for Basketball, with the camera moving in accordance to the 3D effect. Which works well most times, but the camera can get messed up?occasionally.
Football comprises of simple passes and shots, the same goes for Basketball. Tennis on the other hand is less simple, but still suffers from lack of depth. Wrestling had potential, but Hudson yet again messed this up due to the overly simple control scheme. Bowling isn?t as fun as I had hoped it to be and playing makes it evident that it was rushed. I had hope for the Snowmobile Racing, but I was suddenly let down by the lack of sense of speed and sluggish movements of the Snowmobile.
Snowball Fighting is quite fun. It?s sort of like Capture the Flag, because you?ll need defend a pole from the other team. It?s the least boring sport in Deca Sports, which is quite ironic considering Snowball Fighting isn?t a globally recognized sport.
You get bored very quickly playing Deca Sports Extreme, which is ironic because Hudson have dumbed down the sports in order to decrease?boredom?levels. On the Wii, Deca Sports is much less boring because the control scheme is interesting and can even be considered fun, but on the 3DS this doesn?t work due to the standard controls.
Hudson have tried to spice it up by including touch-based inputs for Hockey. and Bowling. But sadly the touch-based inputs are implemented poorly, due to the fact that the game doesn?t respond well to the touch screen.
Deca Sports Extreme also features a multiplayer mode, which supports download play too. Unfortunately, the multiplayer mode does not support online play.
Overall, Deca Sports 3DS is a missed opportunity, and a poor attempt at a sports-collection game. The lack of polish in the minigames (referred to as Sports in the game) is quite alarming, and makes the game feel rushed and quite boring. This is by far the most boring on the Nintendo 3DS, do not buy it, don?t even rent it (like I did).
Loved:
- 3D is used well in some sports
- Wide range of sports
- Unlockables
Hated:
- Lack of polish
- Poor control schemes for some sports
- No online mode
- Gets very boring quickly
Bad: You should not purchase this product at all. (50%)
