Why is committing harder for men | Saving Your Marriage

Why is committment harder for males than woman? The difference is essentially due to how we learn their social roles of being male or female. It occurs through learning one?s gender from very complicated sociological processes all though a person?s life. For example defined roles for men dictate that they should act with caution and humour when the word marriage enters into conversations especially so with other men.

Men may think a relationship as a trap laid by women and after they are married, the word wife becomes a four-letter word. An example employed by a large Australian Internet service provider had the following phrase shown on its home page, ?A man isn?t complete until he is married. And then he is finished.? Although this was most likely written in humor with no harm intended, these kinds of jokes saturate men?s lives to the point whereby men have started to believe that there has to be some truth contained within them.

To add to the authenticity of this information relating to relationships, men don?t challenge one another on the messages commonly found within male humor. Indeed it is not uncommon for women to also take part in such humor, so confirming to men the truth in these jokes. Therefore men bring these misconceptions and fake sentiments into their intimate relationships.

The next example illustrates such relationship dilemmas faced by the 30 something age group: Paul* is a 36 yr old man employed in middle management with a statewide company located in Melbourne. Paul subscribes to this way of thinking and spoke about why he recently ended a two-and-a-half year relationship? ?She was really nice, there had been nothing actually wrong with the relationship, I know she had wanted more, but it just didn?t do it for me anymore.?

Paul?s most important reason for finishing his relationship was that this was no longer exciting and passionate, but had become ordinary and routine. Paul?s decision to end his relationship isn?t an odd practice by men today. Many marriage counsellors agree that it differs for women living in de facto relationships, they?re expecting the relationship to be lasting, with the possibility of marriage.

The ?excitement ? factor used to appraise life is naturally defective given that nearly everything can become unexciting at some point. While fear of the occasional ordinary moment remains a deal breaker, commitment and therefore a meaningful relationship will also remain allusive.
